” Everywhere ” is by Fleetwood Mac, the British-American rock band. Formed in 1967 in London, Fleetwood Mac has notched up worldwide sales of over one hundred million records, making them one of the best-selling groups of all time.
” Everywhere ” was released under the record label Warner Bros on the 28th of November 1987 in the United States and on the 21st of March 1988 in the United Kingdom.
The single was written by band member Christine McVie, who also performs lead vocals. Production for the song was by Fleetwood Mac member Lindsey Buckingham and Richard Dashut, the American producer.
He has worked extensively on many of Fleetwood Mac’s albums including Tusk, Live, Mirage, Tango In The Night and Rumours, their 1978 Grammy-award winning album. It is one of the best-selling albums of all time with global sales of over 40 million copies.
” Everywhere “, a pop-rock song, was taken as the fourth single from the band’s fourteenth studio album, Tango in the Night.
Released on the 13th of April 1987, the album reached number seven on the Billboard 200 in the United States and topped the albums chart in the United Kingdom and Sweden.
The album, which has worldwide sales of over 15 million copies, is the fifth, and at the time of writing, the last studio album from Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, the most successful line-up of the group.
The accompanying music video was directed by Alex Proyas, the Egyptian born, Australian film, commercials and music video director.
Along with Fleetwood Mac, he has directed over one hundred music videos for a variety of recording artists like INXS, Sting and Crowded House.
Alex Proyas is best known for his work on Dark City, a 1998 film starring Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland and Jennifer Connelly. He also directed I, Robot, the 2004 futuristic movie starring Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan and Bruce Greenwood.
The video uses the narrative from The Highwayman, a poem by Alfred Noyes, the English poet, short-story writer and playwright.
The Highwayman, set in rural England in the 1700s, tells the story of a highwayman who is in love with a local InnKeeper’s daughter called Bess. His secret meetings with her are noticed by Tim, a stable hand ( known as an Ostler ), who is also in love with her.
He betrays the Highwayman to the authorities, who escapes capture when Bess sacrifices her life to warn him. The Highwayman Learns she’d died and attempted to get revenge, only to be shot down on the highway. In the final stanza, the ghosts of the Highwayman and Bess meet again on winter nights.
The video features actors Steven Menteith as the Red Coat Commander and Michael Lake as the Ostler.
” Everywhere ” became a commercial success for Fleetwood Mac. In the United States, the single reached number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100. Other Billboard Chart positions were twenty-two on the Mainstream Rock and Number One on the Hot Adult Contemporary Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 2nd of April 1988 and peaked at number four. It spent three weeks in the Top Ten and sixteen weeks in the Top 100.
In Canada, ” Everywhere ” topped the Canadian Adult Contemporary Chart and in Belgium, Fleetwood Mac took the song to the top of the Ultratop 50.
The single peaked inside the Top Five in the Netherlands and Ireland but only reached forty-three in New Zealand.
