” Face to Face ” is by Siouxsie and the Banshees, the alternative rock band was formed in 1976 in London, England, by lead singer Siouxsie Sioux and bass guitarist Steven Severin.
In 1978 the group released their debut album, The Scream. The critically acclaimed and commercially successful album is seen as the landmark of the post-punk era.
The group consisted of Siouxsie Sioux ( Susan Janet Ballion ) on lead vocals, Steven Severin ( Steven John Bailey ) on bass and keyboards, Jon Klein on guitar, Martin McCarrick on dulcimer, cello and keyboards and Budgie ( Peter Edward Clarke ) on percussion, drums and keyboards.
The song was written by Danny Elfman and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Danny is an American composer, singer, songwriter and record producer. He first entered the music business in 1972 when he formed The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, an American new wave band. He is best known for writing the theme to the American animated TV series, The Simpsons.
” Face to Face ” was released on the 13th of July 1992 by record labels Polydor ( Universal Music Group ) and Warner Bros. and features on the albums, The Best of Siouxsie and the Banshees released in 2002, and the 1992 Batman Returns Original Motion Picture Score.
The song features in the 1992 superhero film Batman Returns during the ballroom scene. The film was directed by American film director Tim Burton and was the second instalment in the series that featured actor Michael Keaton as Batman.
The song features strings which build as the song progresses and uses elements from the film score. Lyrically Siouxsie makes several references to the film, albeit in a slightly indirect way and can be heard purring, a reference to Catwoman.
The accompanying music video was directed by Neil Abramson, he also worked on UB40’s 1993 video ( I Can’t Help ) Falling in Love and the video for Fleetwood Mac’s Love Shines, released in 1992.
The video also makes references to the film, at the start a cat is seen walking down steps, and Siouxsie dressed in a leather catsuit, filmed in a gothic setting.
” Face to Face ” was a commercial success for Siouxsie and the Banshees. In the United States, the song was a favourite on alternative rock radio stations, with the single reaching a peak of number seven on the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 25th of July 1992 and reached a peak of number twenty-one. It spent a total of four weeks on the UK chart.
