Fade to Grey Visage

” Fade to Grey ” is by Visage, the British 80s synthpop band. The song was written by Billy Currie, Chris Payne and Midge Ure. The song was produced by visage and Midge Ure. Midge Ure ( James “Midge” Ure ) co-wrote and produced the 1984 charity single ” Do They Know It’s Christmas “, he also helped organise Band-Aid for the fight against famine in Ethiopia.
” Fade to Grey ” was released in 1980 by record label Polydor as the group’s second single from their debut album, Visage.
Visage was founded by Steve Strange ( Stephen John Harrington ) and former drummer with British new wave band the Rich Kids with Rusty Egan. Both started out by hosting David Bowie and Roxy Music club nights at a venue in London’s Soho called Billy’s nightclub. The subterranean nightclub was used by the likes of Boy George of Culture Club, Marilyn, DJ Jeremy Healy and Siobhan Fahey from 80s girl group, Bananarama.
The venue became so popular that Steve and Rusty moved to the Blitz club in London’s Covent Garden in 1979. Steve had a strict door policy of only allowing ” the weird and wonderful ” into the club. It became a huge success and gave rise to a new music movement that would become New Romantic.
Even though ” Fade to Grey ” was the group’s second single, it was their first release on a major record label. The song alternates between English and French. The French lyrics are performed by Brigitte Arens, a Belgium student and Rusty Egan’s girlfriend at the time. In the video, the girl singing is not Belgium student Brigitte Arens, but French fashion model Julia Fodor.
The video was directed by Godley and Crème, better known for their hit ” Cry ” in 1985. The pair not only directed the video for Visage but worked on videos for songs like The Police ” Every Breath You Take ” and Frankie Goes to Hollywood ” Two Tribes ” and “The Power of Love “.
On Visage’s album, songwriting credits for ” Fade to Grey ” are for Billy Currie, Chris Payne and Midge Ure. However, this is a source of contention. Steve Strange claimed that he was a part of the songwriting, specifically the French lyrics. Midge Ure claimed he was the sole writer for the song. After one album with Visage, Midge Ure left to form Ultravox.
The song was a commercial success for Visage. In the United Kingdom, the single charted on the 20th of December 1980 and peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart. The song spent one week in the Top Ten and a total of fifteen weeks on the chart.
” Fade to grey ” was Number One in Germany and Switzerland and a top five hit in five countries.
