” Freestyler ” is by Bomfunk MC’s, who was a hip-hop group from Finland. Active between 1998 and 2005, Bomfunk MC’s included frontman rapper B.O. Dubb ( Raymond Ebanks ) and the main producer Jaakko ” JS16 ” Salovaara.
In 2000, the group won Best Nordic Act award at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Bomfunk MC’s released three albums, but have since moved on to other projects or faded from public view. Jaakko ” JS16 ” Salovaara has gone on to be a successful solo artist and remixer.
” Freestyler ” was written by JS16 and Raymond Ebanks, with production for the single by JS16. The song was released by record labels Sony and Epidrome ( both Sony Music Entertainment ) in October 1999 in Finland and on the 14th of February 2000 worldwide.
The song was taken as the third single from Bomfunk MC’s debut album, In Stereo. The successful album, released in 1999, topped the Finnish Albums Chart and remained on the chart for sixty-nine weeks.
In Stereo became the 25th best-selling album of all time in Finland. In 1999, it was certified 2x Platinum with sales of over 130,000. In Bomfunk MC’s native Finland, the group won best new band, best debut album, best song for ” Freestyler ” and best producer ( JS16 ) at the Emma Awards. The awards, known as Emma Muuvi in Finland, are an annual award ceremony is arranged by Musiikkituottajat – IFPI Finland.
The song is made up of drum and bass with UK dance culture influence; it’s also fused with electronic dance music and hip-hop.
The accompanying music video was directed by Miikka Lommi, the Finnish director, whose career started with this video. It was filmed on location at the Hakaniemi metro station in Finland. One of the first metro stations to open in Helsinki, it serves the central Helsinki districts of Hakaniemi and Kallio.
The video features Finnish model and musician, Marlo Snellman, who was 15 years old at the time of filming. Marlo went on to release a single called ” Dust ” and now ” Dust ” and today works as a producer for his projects, Hipsters and Okta.
” Freestyler ” was a commercial success for Bomfunk MC’s. In the group’s native Finland, the song reached a peak of number four and spent five weeks on The Official Finnish Chart ( Suomen virallinen list ).
In the United Kingdom, it entered the UK Singles Chart on the 5th of August 2000 and reached a peak of number two. It spent six weeks on the Top Ten and a total of seventeen weeks on the UK chart.
