Production for the single was by Mike Elizondo and Ed Sheeran. Mike is an American musician, songwriter and record producer. He is best known for his work with hip hop record producer Dr. Dre and rapper Eminem. Mike co-wrote some of Eminem’s songs, including ” The Real Slim Shady “, his first UK Singles Chart Number One. It was also Eminem’s biggest hit in the US at that time, reaching number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. In addition to working with Dr. Dre and Eminem, Mike has worked with many other artists, like Jay Z, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, D12, Xzibit, Nate Dogg and Obie Trice.
” Galway Girl ” was released as a digital download on the 17th of March 2017 by record labels Asylum and Atlantic ( both Warner Music Group ) and taken as the third single from Ed’s third Album ÷ ( Pronounced ” divide ” ).
The Album, released on the 3rd of March 2017, debuted at the top of the UK Album Chart and became the fastest-selling Album by a male artist with first week sales of 672,000 units. It was the third-highest behind Adele’s 25 and Oasis’ Be Here Now. The Album reached Number One in 14 countries, including the United States, Canada and Australia.
” Galway Girl ” was written and recorded together with Beoga, the Irish folk band. Beoga is made up of Damian McKee, Seán Óg Graham, Liam Bradley, Eamon Murray and Niamh Dunne.
Their Album, mischief, released in 2007, was voted one of the top folk Albums of that year at the Live Ireland Music Awards and the German Music Awards. The incident, their third Album, was shortlisted in the Best Contemporary World Music Album category at the 2010 Grammy Awards. In the same year Beoga were awarded a U.S. House of Representatives Certificate of Congressional Recognition.
During the writing of ” Galway Girl ” Beoga used parts of their song ” Minute 5 “, which is from their Album How to Tune a Fish. Ed said, during an interview with The Irish Times, that the opening lyric of the song, ” She played the fiddle in an Irish band “, was inspired by Beoga member Niamh Dunne. The rest of the lyrics however, were made up and not about anyone in particular.
The accompanying music video was filmed on the 11th of April 2017 in Galway, Ireland. Ed shot the video himself using a body-mounted Steadicam, which is a brand of camera stabilizer mounts for motion picture cameras.
The video features Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, the Irish-American actress. The two-time Academy Award nominee had her debut in the 2007 romantic comedy I Could Never Be Your Woman. In March 2016, she made her Broadway debut playing Abigail Williams in a revival of The Crucible,the role won her critical acclaim.
” Galway Girl ” was a commercial success for Ed. In the United States the song reached a peak of number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and to date has spent 5 weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 16th of March 2017 at number 2 behind ” Shape of You “. To date it has spent 11 weeks in the top ten and 24 weeks on the UK chart. As of April 2017, the song has sold 445,000 combined units in the United Kingdom.
