Gangnam Style Psy

” Gangnam Style ” is by Psy ( Park Jae-Sang ), the South Korean singer, songwriter, record producer and rapper. The K-Pop song was written by Park Jae-sang and Yoo Gun-Hyung.
Production for the single was done by Park Jae-Sang, Yoo Gun-Hyung and Yang Hyun-Suk. The founder and CEO of YG Entertainment, Yang Hyun-Suk rose to fame in the 1990s as a member of Seo Taiji and Boys.
” Gangnam Style ” was released on the 15th of July 2012 by record labels YG Entertainment, Universal Republic and School Boy. The song was taken as the lead single from Psy’s sixth album, Psy 6 ( Six Rules ), Part 1.
The song refers to the lifestyle of the district of Gangnam, the fourth most populated district in Seoul, South Korea. The district is full of trendy and hip people who exclude a specific ” class “.
Psy likened the district to that of Beverly Hills, California. He used the song to poke fun at the attitudes and lifestyle by claiming himself to be ” Gangnam Style “, in fact, all the song portrays, including the music video is anything but high-class.
In an interview with Frances Cha for, Psy explained ” People who are actually from Gangnam never proclaim that they are. It’s only the posers and wannabes that put on these airs and say that they are ‘ Gangnam Style ‘ — so this song is actually poking fun at those kinds of people who are trying so hard to be something that they’re not. ”
The accompanying music video was directed by Cho Soo-Hyun, who also directed videos for ” Gentleman ” and ” Daddy ” for Psy. The video shows Psy wearing different suits and sunglasses performing his now famous comical horse-riding dance routine in various locations around the Gangnam District, including an outdoor yoga session and a hot tub.
The video was filmed over 48 hours, it features more than ten separate locations, however only two are actually filmed in the district of Gangnam. Scenes shot featuring the sauna, elevator and bathroom were filmed elsewhere in the greater Seoul region.
Included in the video are cameos by famous South Korean celebrities. These include 4Minute member Hyuna ( Kim Hyuna ), the singer, dancer, songwriter and model, who dances on the subway.
Also featured is Hwang Min-Woo, the young boy from Korea’s Got Talent. Psy spoke about Hwang Min-Woo in an interview with CNN saying ” the night before the music video shoot, I was watching Korea’s Got Talent and saw him dance to Michael Jackson. His moves were ridiculous. So we called him up and asked him to be in the music video, which was shooting the very next day, and he came, and it all worked out.”
Also featuring in the video are Comedians and television personalities Emcee Yoo Jae-Suk and Noh Hong-Chul.
” Gangnam Style ” became the first YouTube video to reach the milestone of One Billion views. The video reached 2.1 Billion views on the 3rd of December 2014, which is close to the largest representable number in a 32-bit binary number sequence.
The video-sharing site had to change the system used to count views to prevent an Integer overflow, which means it runs out of space for the numbers to be displayed.
The song was a huge commercial success for Psy with Number One positions in more than thirty countries worldwide. In the United States, the song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent a total of twenty-seven weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, ” Gangnam Style ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 15th of September 2012 and reached Number One which it held for one week. The song spent seventeen weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fifty-five weeks on the UK chart.
