Date of release: September 6, 1983
Description: ” Girls just want to have fun ” is by Cyndi Lauper, the American singer. The song was taken from her debut Album ” She’s so unusual “.
Although most people will associate the song with Cyndi, actually the song was originally written and recorded by Robert Hazard in 1979.
Her record company would provide pre-written songs for her to perform, Cyndi was really only interested in writing her own material. When given the chance she would alter the lyrics to the songs she was given. This was the case with ” Girls just want to have fun ” in which Cyndi disliked the anti woman feel of the original so she changed the lyrics with the original writers permission to become an anthem for all young girls.
The song was released in 1983 and was to be the first single by Cyndi as a solo artist. This version became popular as a feminist anthem and was to be her breakthrough single and go on to be her signature tune.
” Girls just want to have fun ” was to become a huge commercial success for Cyndi with a placement on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts at number 2.
The song also went on to be a hit Worldwide during 1983 into early 1984.
The song didn’t quite make it to the top slot in the US. After entering the chart at number 50 and climbing to number 2 it was to be Van Halen’s ” Jump ” that denied Cyndi the coveted number one.
In the UK, ” Girls just want to have fun ” entered at number 50 where it climber to reach number 2 for two weeks.
However Cyndi did make the top of the charts in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Japan, Norway and New Zealand.
A video was made for the song at a cost of around $35,000 and a cast of mostly volunteers, Also involved in the video were her manager, David Wolf, Butch Lauper which was Cyndi’s brother and a few of the record company’s secretaries.
Along with a popular music video, a film was made using the title ” Girls just want to have fun “. The then unknown actresses called Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Hunt and Shannen Doherty were used along with the song.
