In 1997 he won two Ivor Novello Awards for Best Selling British Written Single in the UK and International Hit Of The Year for ” Wannabe “. Also in 1997 he was nominated for a Brit Award for Best British Producer.
Matt Rowe began his career in music at the age of nine with his first Album in 1978 as a chorister in a cathedral choir. Since then he has worked with a variety of artists like the Spice Girls, Sophie Ellis Bexter, Jimmy Somerville and Amy Winehouse.
” Goodbye ” was released on the 14th of December 1998 by record label Virgin ( Universal Music Group ) and features as the eleventh and final track on the group’s third studio Album Forever.
The Album released on the 6th of November 2000, is the only Album not to feature the vocals of Geri Halliwell. She later rejoined them in 2007 for their Greatest Hits Album. Although Forever didn’t sell as well as their two previous Albums, it has sold in the region of 4 million copies Worldwide. In the United Kingdom the Album peaked at number 2, later being certified Platinum with over 300,000 copies sold in the country.
Originally ” Goodbye ” was written by Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard. It was intended to be on Spiceworld, due to time constraints the song wasn’t recorded by the Spice Girls at the time. In 1998, during the American leg of the Spiceworld Tour and after Geri Halliwell had left the group, Richard Stannard and Matt Rowe flew to Nashville, Tennessee. There they met the remainder of the group and rewrote the song.
Melanie C said in Forever Spice, the Spice Girls third autobiography, that ” In the Spice Girls’ third autobiography, “Forever Spice”, Melanie C said [ The song ] was originally about a relationship ending, but now it’s about Geri and it’s really sad. ”
the accompanying music video was directed by Howard Greenhalgh. The British director studied at the Royal College of Art ( RCA ), London. He has directed videos for Genesis, George Michael, Counting Crows, Tanita Tikaram and the Pet Shop Boys. The video was filmed on location on the 1st and 2nd of November 1998 at Mentmore Towers in Mentmore, Buckinghamshire, UK.
” Goodbye ” was a commercial success for the Spice Girls. In the United States the song reached a peak of number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and spent 11 weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 26th of December 1998 and topped the chart for 1 week. It spent 4 weeks in the top ten and a total of 21 weeks on the UK chart.
