” Got to Get ” is by Rob’n’Raz, the Swedish music duo. The single, released in 1989 under the Stockholm based record label Telegram Records, features the vocals of Leila K.
The duo, Rob’n’Raz consisted of Robert Wåtz and Rasmus Lindwall. In the late 1980s, they began working together on writing, composing, music production, remixing and scratching. Along with Leila K, they also worked with Papa Dee ( David Christopher Daniel Wahlgren ). The Swedish songwriter, rapper, ragga and dancehall musician, had his biggest solo hit with his cover version of ” The First Cut Is the Deepest “, a Cat Stevens-penned song released by P. P. Arnold in May 1967. Rob’n’Raz went on to release eighteen singles and five albums.
Leila K, real name Laila El Khalifi, is a Swedish Eurodance singer and former rap artist. Discovered by Rob’n’Raz in a music competition, the performer, of Moroccan descent, was offered a recording contract in 1988. After she split with Rob’n’Raz, she went on to have a successful solo career, and in 1990 she worked with Dr. Alban on ” Hello Afrika! ” his European hit single.
” Got to Get ” features on their debut album, Rob’n’Raz featuring Leila K. The fifteen track album, released under the Arista record label in May 1990 also featured the single ” Rok the Nation “, with the vocals of Leila K.
A successful release, it reached number three in Finland and Sweden. The single peaked at number twenty-one in Germany and Ireland, with a UK chart peak of number forty-one. The album reached fourteen in Sweden, twenty-seven in Austria, eighty-one in the Netherlands and thirty in Switzerland.
” Got to Get ” became a commercial success for Rob’n’Raz and Leila K. In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 25th of November 1989 and peaked at number eight. It spent three weeks in the Top Ten and fourteen weeks in the Top 100.
The single topped the chart in Iceland and reached number two in the Netherlands. ” Got to Get ” peaked at three in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with a number five position in Belgium ( Flanders ) and four in Norway.
In Sweden, it peaked at ten, fourteen in Ireland and eleven on the Eurochart Hot 100. Outside of Europe, the single reached number fifty-seven in Australia and in the United States it peaked at forty-eight on the 31st of March 1990, spending eleven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 there.
