Greg has worked with many artists of different music styles including Katy Perry, Adele, Rufus Wainwright, Twenty One Pilots, OneRepublic, Ariana Grande, Kelly Clarkson, Pharrell Williams, Aerosmith, Burt Bacharach, Celine Dion and Elton John.
The song was released on the 8th of January 2007 by record labels Island and Casablanca ( both part of Universal Music Group ) and taken as the lead single from Mika’s debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion. The album has worldwide sales of 7.8 million since it was released on the 5th of February 2007.
The melody for ” Grace Kelly ” is based on ” Largo al factotum “, the aria from opera, The Barber of Seville, written by Italian composer Gioachino Rossini. The Opera was first performed in the United Kingdom in 1818 and the United States in 1819 and has become one of the most recognised of all Operas.
Mika wrote the song because he felt frustrated with executives from record labels who wanted his sound to change to fit a tested mould. Writing the lyrics, Mika makes the point that he can win approval by pretending to be anyone he chooses, for this song he decided to become ” Grace Kelly “.
Grace Patricia Kelly started her career in acting at the age of 20; the award-winning actress retired six years later to become Princess of Monaco after she married Prince Rainier III. She died in a car crash on the 14th of September 1982.
The whole song is based on Mika’s need for individuality after his record company tried to model him and his music on Craig David, who at the time was a leading performer in the United Kingdom.
Mika’s stood his ground, and the song was a commercial success. In the United States, the song peaked at number fifty-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent fourteen weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, ” Grace Kelly ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 21st of January 2007 at number three and later moved to Number One, it held the top spot for five weeks. The song spent eleven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of forty-nine weeks on the UK chart.
