” Happiness ” is about the disappointment and frustration with the concept of what happiness truly means. Lyrically David is searching for the meaning of happiness which is often defined by others in society, our time at school, our upbringing, family movies, television, songs we hear and the books we read.
David explained his inspiration behind the song ” People don’t even know what it is or what it looks and feels like, even when they find it, or it crosses their path. It’s built up into this mythical, almost unattainable unicorn. Lots of delusions going on. And one’s ego is constantly blocking us from true awareness, grace, peace and love “.
He uses the analogy of ” the beautiful dress in a store with no doors “, the idea is we can see it, but can’t ever wear it or own it.
” Happiness ” is a song that searches for real meaning and concludes that happiness is indeed a frame of mind and has very little to do with money, job, status, material things.
The accompanying music video was shot by Michael Dimitre and was filmed mostly in The Episcopal Trinity Church in Seattle, one of the oldest churches in the city. The church dates back to before the Civil War, designated a Seattle Landmark in 1976 it was later added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Rob Ross, writing for PopDose.com was impressed with the song saying it ” hearkens back to the classic songcraft of the 60s and 70s but still retains a modern edge “.
