” Happy Ending ” is by Mika ( Michael Holbrook Penniman, Jr. ), the British singer and songwriter. The song was written by Mika with production for the single by Greg Wells.
Greg Wells is a Los Angeles based Canadian musician, record producer and songwriter. He has written and produced with artists including Adele, Twenty One Pilots, Katy Perry and Elton John. Greg’s songs have appeared on some 85 Million Albums or more.
” Happy Ending ” was released on the 15th of October in the United Kingdom and on the 11th of January 2008 throughout the rest of Europe. It was released by record label Island ( a division of Universal Music Group ) and taken as the third single from Mika’s debut album, Life In Cartoon Motion.
The song also features opera singer, Ida Falk Winland. At the age of ten the Swedish soprano studied the cello and piano, and at 16 she won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music where she became a classmate of Mika.
In 2007 during an interview with the British newspaper, The Sun, Mika described what the song meant to him. ” It’s about a few things. In a way, it’s a kind of sad break-up song like ‘My Interpretation.’ But, at the same time, it’s about a lot of other things. ”
Adding ” I’ll never forget when I was actually recording this song in Los Angeles, I would take this drive from where I was staying to the studio, which wasn’t in the city and the amount of homeless people I saw on the way was absolutely shocking. Those horrible images of homelessness that I would see every morning really connected with that song. So it just comes to show you that a bright song in a certain mindset had a meaning that really evolves and changes as time goes by. I think that it is very important that other listeners find their own meaning to songs. So many people are very openly suggestive to the point of being abstract. It’s the most powerful thing when that becomes the song. ”
The accompanying video was directed by Alex Large and Liane Sommers ( AlexandLiane ). The British directing team who are based in both London and Berlin have directed music videos for other artists along with Mika including Take That, Cheryl Cole, La Roux and Scissor Sisters.
Music critics liked ” Happy Ending “. Writing for PopMatters Christian John Wikane commented about Mika’s voice, he wrote ” Like a choirboy singing by candlelight, Mika awakes goosebumps with the chilling purity of his voice. ”
” Lovely, piano-led ” is how Lizzie Ennever from BBC Music described the song in her review. About.com’s Graham Griffith review was brief and straight to the point; he simply said the song was ” gorgeous. ”
” Happy Ending ” was a commercial success for Mika. The song reached Number One in Slovakia and reached the Top Ten in Hungary, Netherlands and Australia.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 6th of October 2007 and reached a peak of number seven. It spent one week in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-five weeks on the UK chart.
