Heart and Soul T’Pau

” Heart and Soul ” is by T’Pau, who was a British pop band popular in the late 80s to early 90s. Formed in Shropshire, England in 1986, the original line-up consisted of Carol Decker on lead vocals, Ron Rogers on guitar, Dean Howard on lead guitar, Paul Jackson on bass, Michael Chetwood on keyboards and Tim Burgess on drums.
The band took its name from the cult 1960s Si-Fi series Star Trek’s Vulcan heroine, T’Pau. She was one of the leaders of the Syrranites, who believed in the teachings of Surak, the important philosopher in the Vulcan planet’s history. They rebelled against the Vulcans supreme command in the 22nd Century.
Before settling on the name, they called themselves Talking America. The original band released eighteen singles between 1987 and 1999. They also release four Studio albums and three compilation albums. The original group disbanded in 1991 after the song ” Whenever You Need Me “. Released as the lead single from their third album, The Promise, it reached number sixteen on the UK Singles Chart.
A new version of T’Pau, with Carol and Ronnie, released Pleasure & Pain in February 2015, their fifth studio album overall. The album entered the UK Albums Chart on the 14th of February 2015 and peaked at number ninety-eight. In November 2017, T’Paul embarked on an anniversary tour of the United Kingdom, taking many cities around the country including London, Brighton and Manchester.
” Heart and Soul ” was written by Carol Decker and Ron Rogers. Production for the single was by Roy Thomas Baker, the award-winning and multi-Platinum English record producer, songwriter and arranger.
Roy, born on the 10th of November 1946, started his career at the age of just fourteen at Decca Records. He has worked with a variety of artists including Queen, Guns N’ Roses, Alice Cooper, Foreigner, Pilot, Ozzy Osbourne, Devo, The Stranglers and Dusty Springfield.
The song was released by record label Virgin ( Universal Music Group ) on the 20th of April 1987 in the United States and in August 1987 in the United Kingdom. It was released as the band’s first single from their debut album, Bridge of Spies.
The album, released on the 14th of September 1987, reached number thirty-one on the Billboard 200 Chart in the United States and topped the Albums Chart in the United Kingdom, holding the top position for one week. Successful in other countries of Europe, Bridge of Spies also topped the Norwegian Albums Chart.
The song is well known for its use of overdubs of her vocals. The usage of overlapping lyrics in the composition makes it difficult in live performances without the aid of backup singers. To overcome the problem, Carol often performs a basic, stripped down version.
” Heart and Soul ” was a commercial success for T’Pau. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number four on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending twenty-seven weeks on the chart there. It also reached number thirteen on the Dance Songs Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 1st of August 1987 and reached a peak of number four. It spent four weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fourteen weeks on the UK chart.
