” How Do You Do ” was by Mouth and MacNeal, the pop duo from the Netherlands. They consisted of Big Mouth ( Wilhelmus Jacobus Duyn, or just Willem Duyn ) and Maggie MacNeal ( Sjoukje van’t Spijker ).
The song was written by Hans van Hemert and Harry van Hoof. Hans van Hemert is a Dutch record producer, songwriter and Dutch ASCAP ( American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers ) award, winner. Along with Mouth and MacNeal, he also produced for Luv’, the female pop trio who have sold over seven million records.
Harry van Hoof is a Dutch conductor, composer and music arranger. He has conducted fifteen Eurovision Song Contest entries between 1972 and 1994.
” How Do You Do ” was released by record labels Decca Records and Philips Records ( both now part of the Universal Music Group ), the single was taken from Mouth and MacNeal’s album of the same name.
In 1971, record producer Hans van Hemert, paired Big Mouth and Maggie MacNeal to form the successful duo. Big Mouth started his career as a drummer with the Holland Quintet and had sung with many bands during the 1960s, which included Speedway, Jayjays and Les Etoiles.
Maggie MacNeal had released one single, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s ” I Heard It Through the Grapevine “, before joining with Mouth to form the partnership.
Mouth and MacNeal, Hans van Hemert and Harry van Hoof received the first ever Buma Export Award in 1972. The award is given to Dutch artists who sell the most records abroad in a year. Each year the prize is awarded by the Buma Cultuur foundation, other awards presented by the foundation include the Golden Harp and Zilveren Harp.
” How Do You Do ” was played on US radio by disc jockey Jim Connors, during his career he earned thirteen Gold records for his discovery of artists. Due to his airplay, the song made the Top Ten on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972. It was to be Mouth and MacNeal’s only chart success in the country.
In the United States, the song peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent a total of nineteen weeks on the chart there. It was awarded a Gold disc by Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) for sales of over a million copies.
The song was a massive hit throughout continental Europe, making number one in several countries. The single wasn’t released in the United Kingdom. Worldwide sales for the single was over of two million copies.
