” How Will I Know ” is by Whitney Houston ( Whitney Elizabeth Houston ), the American singer, actress, producer and model. the song was written by George Merrill, Shannon Rubicam and Narada Michael Walden.
Production for the single was by Narada Michael Walden, in 1988 Narada was awarded a Grammy for Producer of the Year and again in 1993 for album of the Year for the movie soundtrack The Bodyguard. He has also owned and operated Tarpan Studios, a recording studio in San Rafael, California since the 1980’s.
” How Will I Know ” was released by record label Arista on the 22nd of November 1985 and taken as the third single from Whitney’s debut album, Whitney Houston.
The 80’s dance beat song was initially intended for singer Janet Jackson, Janet’s management decided the song wasn’t right for her as it was deemed to be too weak against her other material.
George Merrill explained in an interview with Fred Bronson their disappointment ” We were pretty upset because we thought it was perfect for her at the time. We had written it with her completely in mind “.
Instead, the song was shown to Gerry Griffith, director for R&B music at A&M and Arista Records. At the time he was gathering material for Whitney’s debut album and felt the song would fit in with the other songs.
Narada Michael Walden was then sent the demo to work on, not impressed he asked for permission to alter some of the lyrics and chords. He was denied permission to do so, and a stand-off ensued. After a lot of back-and-forth negotiations finally, he was allowed to alter the key and tempo.
The instrumental part of the song was completed at Narada Michael Walden’s recording studio in San Rafael, California.
Once done Whitney entered the studio in New York to record vocals, Cissy Houston, Whitney’s mother, was to provide backing vocals at Whitney’s insistence.
Later the backing vocals by Whitney’s mother were dropped, and Whitney performed both lead and backing vocals for the song.
” How Will I Know ” got mostly positive reviews from music critics with many making the song the standout single from the album.
Rolling Stone’s Don Shewey said the song ” Although it’s awfully reminiscent of the Pointer Sisters’ ‘He’s So Shy’, ‘How Will I Know’ is still irresistibly danceable “.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic said of the song in his review ” …what really impresses some 20-plus years on are the lighter tracks, particularly the breakthrough single ‘How Will I Know’ “.
