” Hung Up ” is by Madonna ( Madonna Louise Ciccone ), the American singer, songwriter. The song was written by Madonna and Stuart Price, with additional songwriting credits for Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA.
The song was released by the record label Warner Bros and taken as the first single from the album, Confessions on a Dance Floor.
Madonna got inspiration for ” Hung up ” from the late 1970s disco music, artists such as Giorgio Moroder and ABBA, she also turned to the 1977 movie ” Saturday Night Fever ” which featured music from the Bee Gees. She used part of ABBA’s hugely successful single ” Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) ” released originally in 1979.
Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, songwriters of the track and copyright owners, do not usually allow their work to be sampled, the only other occasion they did so was for the Fugees single ” Rumble in the Jungle ” which sampled ” The Name Of The Game “.
For Madonna to get permission to use the sample, she sent her emissary to Stockholm; she’d written a letter begging Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus for authorisation and telling them how much she loved their work. She later spoke to Attitude magazine about the experience ” I had to send my emissary to Stockholm with a letter begging them and telling them how much I love their music,”.
With Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus being well-known for turning down requests for the use of their work Madonna added ” They never let anyone sample their music. Thank God they didn’t say no “.
The two ABBA songwriters agreed to Madonna’s request only after a copyright agreement was signed entitling them to a significant share of the royalties from sales and airplay.
” Hung Up ” received positive reviews from music critics, Billboard’s Chris Tucker said, ” Madonna returns with a song that will restore faith among her minions, fans of pop music and radio programmers “.
Another critic, this time from the United Kingdom newspaper The Guardian commented ” Hung Up” is Madonna’s “most wonderfully commercial single since the mid-Eighties “.
The song was a success both with music critics and Commercially, ” Hung Up ” reached Number One in some forty-one countries and earned Madonna a place in the 2007 Guinness Book of World Records for the song topping the charts in the most countries.
In the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number twenty and climbed to reach number seven, the song spent a total of twenty weeks on the chart.
Outside of the United States, ” Hung up ” reached Number One in just about every European county excluding Ireland where the song reached number two.
Madonna also took the top spot in Australia but failed to reach the top in New Zealand with a peak of number two.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at Number One and held the spot for three weeks. It spent ten weeks in the Top Ten and a total of forty weeks on the UK chart.
