Hunger Florence and the Machine

Florence and the Machine ( stylised Florence + the Machine ) released the latest single “ Hunger ” on 3 May 2018 by Virgin EMI. It is the second single from their fourth studio album, High as Hope. The Indie rock band from London gained their reputation through BBC Introducing, a platform supporting unsigned artists. They later won the Brits Critics Choice Award in 2009.
The song was composed by the lead singer of the band Florence Welch, the keyboardist Emile Haynie, Tobias Jesso Jr.and Thomas Bartlett. It is produced by the American music producer, Haynie and the vocalist, Welch.
After the How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful Tour, the debut album, High as Hope was recently released on June 29th. “ Hunger ” scored the band another Number One hit on the Billboard’s Adult Alternative Songs Chart for the fifth time in June. The song is currently standing ninth in the Hot Rock Songs on Billboard and second spot in Iceland. The song debuted at ninety-two in Australia and is gaining momentum in countries like Belgium and UK.
The alternative/indie song is 3:34 minutes long, and the music video was directed by AJ Rojas who also artfully captured the video for the band’s previous single “ Sky Full of Song ”. The six times Grammy Award nominees are known for their dramatic and eccentric take on social norms through music.
The video for “ Hunger ” features Welch in a glorious multi-coloured artfully vibrant video. She presents a contrast with the sombre Renaissance art gallery where viewers examine a statue in a black and white scene. The viewers interpret and explore the biblically figurative sculptures in various expectations of beauty and rediscovering that the ethereal beauty of love that transforms it.
The lyrics of “ Hunger ” is uniquely personal to Welch as she compiled most of it from her own experiences as a teenager looking for love in the wrong way, starving herself to feel better and maturing to understand and accept her painful longings. The song shows her vulnerability yet victorious declaration over her insecurities and a celebration of beauty, and the admiration for the younger generations of today in upbeat music.
Since its release in the US, the video has garnered over 15 million views on YouTube and has many fans and critics drawn to the symbolically beautiful and quirky nature of the theme. It is a musical art that makes listeners want to move physically, dance or frolic while being flirty and happy about something that is so universally relatable.
The choral sound accompanied by the chiming pianos create an almost gospel vibe that embraces insecurities. “ Hunger ” bursts with thunderous drums, lyrical honesty and subtle strings that desires youthfulness and serves a catchy tune with heavy lyrics. It is one of the most radio-friendly music that they’ve ever released but still true to the outstandingly unique pop maestro’s works.
This single is a perfect teaser for the coming album that keeps fans anticipating with high hopes for a more dynamic album. It is an introduction to the familiar free spirit, soulful and highly poetic lyrics and instrumentally rich music that had fans hooked to Florence and the Machine for years.
