Noel Zancanella co-produced Taylor Swift’s ” Welcome to New York ” and has co-written songs for Gwen Stefani, Ellie Goulding, B.o.B and Maroon 5. In 2016, the Los Angeles based producer and songwriter won a Grammy in the Album of the Year category for his work with Taylor Swift on her Album 1989.
The song was released on September the 23rd 2014 by record labels Mosley and Interscope and taken as the sixth single from their third Album ” Native “.
” I lived ” is about overcoming challenges that life throws at you. In an interview with People, the popular American celebrity and human-interest magazine, Ryan explained the song ” The whole idea, to quote the late great Robin Williams from Dead Poets Society, is very much ‘carpe diem’ ( seize the day ) “.
He added that ” it’s absolutely universal and applicable to everybody “. With reference to the lyric ” With every broken bone, I swear I lived,” Ryan said ” So for every day that you’re on this earth, for every minute that you have, the whole idea is doing nothing less than exactly what you feel you’re supposed to do and squeezing every last drop out of life every day, regardless of the difficulties or trials that you face “.
The accompanying music video was directed by Noble Jones, who has also directed music videos for Ziggy Marley, Taylor Swift, Michael Bublé and the Ying Yang Twins.
The idea for the video came from English music video director Sophie Muller. She has worked with artists like Shakira, Annie Lennox, Leona Lewis and Beyoncé. Sophie has directed over 100 videos during her career.
The music video for ” I lived ” is dedicated to Bryan Warnecke, a 15-year-old fan of OneRepublic. Bryan suffers from the medical condition cystic fibrosis.
cystic fibrosis is genetic disorder, one that affects mostly the sufferers lungs but can also affect other organs like pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine.
In the video Bryan can be seen on a skateboard, bicycling and playing hockey. In the video Bryan explains to the viewer what it is like to live with cystic fibrosis ” It feels like I’m breathing through a straw,” he says ” Whenever I try to breathe hard, it hurts. I want to make the most out of my life and have as much fun as I possibly can and my biggest fear is not being able to do that “.
Towards the end of the video Bryan is driven to a concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado to watch OneRepublic perform. The Red Rocks Amphitheater is situated near the small town of Morrison ( census of 2000 population 430 ), Colorado. Other groups who have performed there are The Beatles, Jethro Tull and U2.
The video ends with Bryan cycling to raise money for cystic fibrosis suffers. ” This year Bryan and his teammates have ridden over 1200 miles and raised $300,000 for Cystic Fibrosis research ” is shown at the end and refers the viewer to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) website.
” I lived ” was a commercial success for OneRepublic. In the United States the song reached number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent one week on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart on the 8th of November 2014 and peaked at number 29. It spent 4 weeks in the top forty and a total of 6 weeks on the UK chart.
