Description: ” I Love You ” is by Vanilla Ice ( Robert Matthew Van Winkle ), the American rapper, actor and television host. Born in Dallas, Texas, Vanilla Ice became interested in hip-hop at an early age. Raised by his mother in a poor part of Miami, he never knew his father.
Despite his cultivated image on stage, Vanilla Ice was a member of a church choir until the age of 15. It is said that he got his name during his early teens when he practised breakdancing, his friends nicknamed him Vanilla because that he was the only white member of the group. He later added Ice ( a breakdance move ) to form his stage name.
Vanilla Ice began to perform publicly during an open mic event at a South Dallas nightclub called City Lights. After being invited to play regularly by the manager, John Bush, he’d be joined by his DJ’s D-Shay and Zero as well as the resident DJ, Earthquake. Vanilla Ice often opened for other hip-hop acts like N.W.A, Public Enemy, The D.O.C., Tone Loc, 2 Live Crew, Paula Abdul, Sinbad and MC Hammer.
In 1989 he released Hooked, his debut Album. Hooked was later reformatted and retitled To the Extreme. On the 2nd of July 1990, his debut single, ” Ice Ice Baby ” was released by record label SBK Records ( Universal Music Group ). The single became the first hip-hop song to reach Number One on the Billboard 100 Chart in the United States. The song also topped the charts in Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. The Album, To the Extreme, reached Number One on the Billboard 200 chart, spending 16 weeks at the top and had Worldwide sales of over 15 Million.
” I Love You ” was written by Vanilla Ice, Earthquake, Kim Sharp, M. Smooth and P. Loomis. Production for the single was by Vanilla Ice, Gail “Sky” King and Kim Sharp.
The song was released in 1991 by record label SBK Records ( Universal Music Group ) and taken from Vanilla Ice’s debut Album, To the Extreme. The Album, originally titled Hooked, was released in 1989 by independent record label Ichiban Records. The Album contained two of Vanilla Ice’s most successful singles, ” Ice Ice Baby ” and ” Play That Funky Music “. It became the fastest selling hip hop album of all time with seven Million copies shipped throughout the United States. Up until that date To the Extreme was the best-selling hip-hop Album.
As a ballad, ” I Love You ” was a departure from the usual style that Vanilla Ice’s fans had grown accustomed. The accompanying video was directed by Michael Bay, the American director. He has worked with a variety of recording artists like Lionel Richie, Aerosmith, Meat Loaf, Tina Turner, The Neville Brothers, Donny Osmond, Chicago and Styx.
” I Love You ” was a commercial success for Vanilla Ice. In the United States, the song reached number fifty-two on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending seven weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles chart on the 30th of March 1991 and reached a peak of number forty-five. It spent a total five weeks on the UK chart.
The song also charted in Germany, Netherlands and New Zealand.
