” I Owe You Nothing ” is by Bros, the English band, formed in 1986 in Peckham, London. The original line up consisted of twin brothers Matt and Luke Goss, along with best friend, Craig Logan.
The song was written by brothers Goss and Nicky Graham. Nicky Graham ( Nicholas Lynedoch ‘Nicky’ Graham ) is a musician, songwriter and music producer based in the UK. His music career started in 1965, since then he had worked with many artists including the late David Bowie. As a producer and songwriter, he has worked with many artists including The Nolans, Code Red, Shakin’ Stevens, Aaron Carter and Bros.
” I Owe You Nothing ” was released on the 6th of June 1988 by record label CBS ( Columbia Broadcasting System ) and taken from their 4x Platinum UK Album, Push.
Bros, known for their ripped jeans, leather jackets, Grolsch lager bottle tops on DM’s ( Dr Martin shoes ) and gold chains, were initially called Caviar. They then changed their name to Gloss before finally settling on Bros.
In 1985 they met Nicky Graham, and he introduced them to Pet Shop Boys manager Tom Watkins. After the name and image makeover, the new group released their first single in August 1987 ” I Owe You Nothing “, which failed to make an impression by missing the Top 75 in the UK.
Bros then released ” When Will I Be Famous ” which was written by Nicky Graham, reaching number sixty-two in the United Kingdom. By now teenage magazines had them on their radar and interest was growing.
” When Will I Be Famous ” shot up the charts and reached number two in the UK. Their debut Album Push and their follow-up single ” Drop The Boy ” both made number two and so their record label, CBS, decided to re-release ” I Owe You Nothing ” on the 6th of June 1988.
Bros mania ensued and at an appearance at Oxford Street’s HMV in September 1988 police had to close part of the street which caused chaos. The type of hysteria hadn’t been seen since the Osmonds and Bay City Rollers.
Bros never made the Billboard Hot 100 Chart but did manage to reach number ten on the Billboard Dance Chart. The band officially split in 1993, but on the 5th of October 2016 it was announced there would be a 30th-anniversary concert at The O2 Arena, located on the Greenwich Peninsula in south-east London.
As of 2015, the Arena is the busiest music arena in the world regarding ticket sales; the site handles 1,819,487 tickets.
The tickets for the Bros concert went on sale on 7th October 2016 at 11 o’clock; they sold out in less than seven seconds. The speed of ticket sales made it one of LiveNation’s fastest concerts to sell out.
The song was a success in the United Kingdom reaching Number One and spending two weeks there. The song spent five weeks in the Top Ten and a total of seventeen weeks on the UK chart.
Outside of the UK, the song made the Top Ten in many countries including Switzerland, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand.
