Production for the single was by Mike Howlett. Mike, a Grammy Award-winning producer has worked with OMD ( Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ), Joan Armatrading, Sniff ‘n’ the Tears and China Crisis. He was awarded a Grammy in 1982 from The Recording Academy ( Formerly National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences ) for another A Flock of Seagulls track ” DNA “.
” I Ran ” was released in 1982 by record label Jive Records ( ceased as a label in 2011 ) and taken as the second single from their self-titled debut Album.
A Flock of Seagulls were formed in Liverpool by Mike Score, a former hairdresser. According to Mike, the group got their name from a 1978 Stranglers song ” Toiler on the Sea ” taken from the Stranglers Album ” Black and White “.
The group practised above Mike’s hair salon, then moved on to play in clubs before landing a recording deal with the Cocteau record label. After a couple of releases with that label, they signed with Jive.
The accompanying music video was directed by Tony van den Ende. Tony has directed many artists including Guns N Roses, Manic St Preachers, Simply Red, Lenny Kravitz and The Cult. He has also directed classical music videos with artists like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Bryn Terfel.
In the video, the group performs the song in a mirrored room covered with aluminium foil. The video is a tribute to the 1973 Album ” No Pussyfooting ” by British musicians Robert Fripp and Brian Eno, credited on the Album cover as Fripp & Eno.
The video was played abundantly on MTV in the summer of 1982, a large number of plays helped the song become a hit. With the added help of the MTV plays the song became a commercial success for the group.
In the United States ” I Ran ” entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and reached a peak of number nine, it spent a total of twenty-two weeks on the chart there. The song also made the Top Tracks Chart reaching number three and number eight on the Hot Dance Club Play Chart. The Album too did well in the US with a peak of number ten on the Billboard 200 Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 27th of March 1982 and reached a peak of number forty-three. It spent a total of six weeks on the UK chart.
