” I Try ” was released by Epic ( Sony Music Entertainment ) on the 25th of January 2000 in the United States, outside of the US the song was released on the 27th of September 1999, it was released as the second single from Macy’s debut multi-platinum Album, On How Life Is.
The Album, released on the 1st of July by Epic, went on to become Macy’s best-selling Album to date, with 3.2 million copies sold in the United States and seven million copies worldwide.
” I Try ” is about Macy’s marrage to a mortgage broker ,Tracy Hinds. They divorced when her career was about to begin. Lyrically the song talks about how she trys to find strength and leave memories of him behind, but she just can’t forget.
The accompanying music video was directed by Mark Romanek, the American filmmaker. His work includes feature films, television, music videos and commercials. As a director of music videos, Mark has worked with Johnny Cash, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Madonna. He directed the ” Scream ” video for Michael & Janet Jackson.
The video, filmed in New York, features Macy waking up in a hotel room, buying flowers and traveling through the City, where she meets a man. The ending of the video shows Macy to still be in her hotel room, impling that she may have been dreaming the entire time and all of the events in the video didn’t really happan at all.
The song was a commercial success for Macy. In the United States the song reached a peak of number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending 27 weeks on the chart there. It also reached Number One on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 Chart, number 21 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and number 21 on the Billboard Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart.
In the United Kingdom ” I Try ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 9th of October 1999 and reached a peak of number 6. The song spent 9 weeks in the top ten and a total of 22 weeks on the UK chart.
