” I Want It That Way ” is by Backstreet Boys, the boy band from Orlando, Florida USA. The song was written by Max Martin and Andreas Carlsson with production by Max Martin and Kristian Lundin, the Swedish producers who have written for Britney Spears.
The song is a ballad that talks about a relationship that gets strained with distance. Many have come to question the lyrics and their meaning; some have said the words make no sense at all.
One part of the song that drew the most criticism was the line ” I Want It That Way “. LA Weekly’s Ben Westhoff looked closely at the lyrical meaning and concluded that the lyrics ” makes zero sense “.
Another critic of the song’s lyrical content was Andrew Unterberger from PopDust.com, who also questioned the use of the line ‘I Want It That Way’ he stated it was without any inherent meaning.
However other critics praised the song, one critic saying ” I want it that way ” was a lovely pop tune and another ranking it with the best bubblegum pop ballads out there.
Along with the music critics, the Chinese government’s Ministry of Culture made public a list of the 100 songs that were required to be removed from the internet. The 100 songs were seen by the Ministry as a threat to national security and ” I Want It That Way ” just happened to be on the list.
Despite the mixed reaction by the music critics and the Chinese government, the record buying public liked the song, and the Backstreet Boys would notch up one of their most successful songs.
