” I Won’t Give Up ” was written by Jason Mraz and Michael Natter, the American singer and guitarist. Michael has worked with Anja Nissen, Alex & Sierra, Angela Groothuizen and Titanium, the New Zealand boyband.
Production for the single was by Joe Chiccarelli, The American music producer, mixer and engineer. Born in Boston, the capital of the State of Massachusetts. The city, founded in 1630, is one of the oldest cities in the United States.
Joe has worked in the music industry since the 1980s, producing for many artists including Stan Ridgway, Elton John, Rufus Wainright, U2, Alanis Morissette, Beck, Etta James, Jamie Cullum, Al Stewart, Tori Amos, The Killers, Morrissey, Christina Perri and Glenn Frey.
The song was released on the 3rd of January 2012 by record label Atlantic ( Warner Music Group ) and taken as the first official single from Jason’s fourth studio Album; Love Is a Four Letter Word.
The Album, released on the 13th of April 2012, received good reviews from critics. It was a commercial success for Jason. In the United States, it reached number two on the Billboard 200 Chart. In the United Kingdom, the Album reached the same position on the UK Albums Chart. Love Is a Four Letter Word fared better in Canada, where it topped the Canadian Albums Chart.
” I Won’t Give Up ” is an acoustic folk ballad. Jason wrote it during his activist outings, and lyrically the song discusses not giving up on loving someone, being comfortable oneself, and not giving up on the dreams we all have.
The accompanying music video was directed by Mark Pellington, the American film director, writer and producer. Mark was born on the 17th of March 1962 in Baltimore, the largest city in the US State of Maryland.
In 1990 he became a freelance director working with U2, Crystal Waters, De La Soul, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, Michael Jackson, Public Enemy, Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam. The video Mark directed for Pearl Jam’s “ Jeremy ” one of the most honoured music videos ever made. For his work, Mark won Best Director at the 1992 Billboard Video Music Awards. He also won four MTV Video Music Awards in 1993, including Best Director and Video of the Year.
” I Won’t Give Up ” was a commercial success for Jason. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending forty-four weeks on the chart there. It also reached number eighteen on Adult Alternative Songs, three on Adult Contemporary, eight on Adult Top 40 and twenty on the Mainstream Top 40 Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 24th of March 2012 and reached a peak of number eleven. It spent eleven weeks in the Top Twenty and a total of forty-five weeks on the UK chart.
