” If You’re Not the One ” is by Daniel Bedingfield ( Daniel John Bedingfield ), the award-winning English-New Zealand singer, songwriter and record producer.
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Daniel is the brother of recording artists Natasha Bedingfield and Nikola Rachelle. His debut single, ” Gotta Get Thru This “, released on the 26th of November 2001 as the lead single from his debut Album, built up momentum as a white label.
The song recorded in his bedroom using a PC and a microphone went on to top the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, Daniel reached the Top Ten on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Album, also called Gotta Get Thru This, reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, making sales of over four million copies worldwide. Since his debut single, Daniel has had two more singles top the UK Singles Chart ” If You’re Not The One ” and ” Never Gonna Leave Your Side “. Another three of his songs became Top Ten hits.
As a songwriter, Daniel has worked with K-pop group Spica, Ben Haenow and SecondCity; the latter topped the UK Singles Chart with ” I Wanna Feel ” in 2014.
Daniel helped launch the Stop the Traffik, which is a coalition against modern-day slavery (website link below ). The campaign was founded in 2006 by Steve Chalke MBE with the intention to educate people on the misery that this type of trafficking inflicts.
The song was written by Daniel Bedingfield with production for the single by Mark Taylor, the British record producer and songwriter. Mark has worked with many artists, covering a variety of genres. These include Tina Turner, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, Hall & Oates, Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart and Enrique Iglesias. Mark worked on Believe, Cher’s 1998 Album which went on to sell over twenty million copies worldwide. The title track has sold over eleven million copies globally, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.
” If You’re Not the One ” was released on the 25th of November 2002 by record labels Island and Polydor ( both Universal Music Group ). The song was taken as the third single from Daniel’s debut studio Album; Gotta Get Thru This.
The Album, released on the 27th of August 2002, had six singles released from the Album. It peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart and reached number ten on the Billboard 200 Chart in the United States. Gotta Get Thru This is certified 5x Platinum and has sold over 1.63 million copies in the UK. Worldwide, sales of the Album have passed four million copies.
The ballad’s lyrics are cheesy according to Daniel. He believed that complicated lyrics wouldn’t get him a record deal, so wrote the song in the same style as Westlife, the successful Irish boy band. When asked which lady Daniel sings about, he remains tight-lipped as to the identity, only to say it’s an ex-girlfriend.
The accompanying music video was directed by Mark Read who is a member of A1, the British–Norwegian pop group. The band enjoyed success in the late 1990s and early 2000s in the United Kingdom and many other countries. A1 has a large following Southeast Asia.
” If You’re Not the One ” was a commercial success for Daniel. In the United States, the song became his highest-debuting single. There it debuted at number fifty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart eventually peaking at number fifteen. It spent twenty weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 7th of December 2002 at Number One and spent one week at the top.
