” I’m So Excited ” was written by Trevor Lawrence, Anita, June and Ruth Pointer. Trevor is an American saxophonist and music producer. As a saxophonist he has worked with a wide range of recording artists like Ringo Starr, Mick Jagger, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Roberta Flack and John Lennon. As a producer he has worked with the likes of Sheryl Lee Ralph, The Pointer Sisters and Etta James.
The song was produced by Richard Perry, the American record producer. An in demand producer since 1970, Richard has worked on Albums for Harry Nilsson, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Art Garfunkel, Diana Ross, Martha Reeves, Manhattan Transfer, Leo Sayer, Andy Williams and Percy Faith.
” I’m So Excited ” was originally released in September 1982 and re-released in July 1984 by record label Planet Records ( Sony Music Entertainment ), the song was taken from the group’s ninth studio Album So Excited! and later included on their tenth studio Album, Break Out.
The Album, So Excited!, was released in July 1982 and featured a cover of Prince’s ” I Feel for You ” which was later covered by Chaka Khan some two years later. The third single on the Album, ” See How the Love Goes ” was shelved due to lyrical content that was deemed controversial at the time.
The Break Out Album was released on the 6th of November 1983 and is their most successful Album to date, selling in excess of three Million copies in the United States alone. The Pointer Sisters won two Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards for the Album.
The accompanying music video for the 1984 version was directed by Kenny Ortega, the American producer, director and choreographer. He is best known for directing Hocus Pocus, the High School Musical trilogy, Descendants and Michael Jackson’s This Is It concerts. Kenny has worked with many artists including Cher, Elton John, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac and Rod Stewart.
” I’m So Excited ” was a commercial success for The Pointer Sisters. In the United States the song reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending 40 weeks on the chart there. It also reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Chart.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 27th of October 1984 and reached a peak of number 11. It spent 4 weeks in the top twenty and a total of 11 weeks on the UK chart.
