” I’m Too Sexy ” was released on the 15th of July 1991 by record labels Tug ( UK ) and Charisma ( US ) and taken as the group’s debut single from their debut album, UP.
Right Said Fred was named after the novelty song of the same name by actor Bernard Cribbins, the song was written by Ted Dicks and Myles Rudge. The 1962 single which reached number ten on the UK Singles Chart was inspired by workmen trying to move a Grand piano.
” I’m Too Sexy ” is about men who are over-confident about their own sexiness and the fact they think they are too sexy for many things. The inspiration for the song came about when the brothers worked as Gym instructors at the Dance Attic, a London dance studio. They noticed how the males spent their time posing, so after borrowing £1500 ( pretending to buy a car ), they set about recording their debut single.
The group had a demo made as a rock track which came to the attention of Guy Holmes, the founder and CEO of Gut Records along with Intermedia promotions. He is best known for discovering some of the most prominent artists including U2, Duran Duran, Jesse J and David Guetta. He is also the man behind the Crazy Frog ringtone to music hit single.
In an interview with the British newspaper The Independent Guy recalled the first time he heard the song ” I heard that coming back from a night out with this very cute girl I fancied – who didn’t fancy me, unfortunately. She was sitting drunk on the back seat and said she managed a band. She put the cassette in and there was ‘I’m Too Sexy,’ an awful rock demo version. It was clear it would make a great dance record though. Radio One loved it, but no major would touch it. I thought bollocks to them and put it out myself – it sold six million singles and five million albums. ”
The song was a commercial success for the group. In the United States, it reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent a total of thirty-five weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the song reached a peak of number two. It equalled the previous record for the most weeks at number two held by Father Abraham’s ” The Smurf Song ” in 1978.
” I’m Too Sexy ” was held back by Bryan Adams with his single ” ( Everything I Do ) I Do It for You “. Right Said Fred spent ten weeks in the Top Ten and a total of seventeen weeks on the UK chart.
