” Impossible ” is by Shontelle, the R&B singer-songwriter from Barbados. The song was written by Arnthor Birgisson and Ina Wroldsen.
The production for the song was done by Arnthor Birgisson, who has also worked with artists like Britney Spears and Leona Lewis.
” Impossible ” was released in 2010 by record labels SRC and Motown, the song was taken as the first single from Shontelle’s second album, No Gravity.
Initially, the song was offered to Leona Lewis, but she turned down the opportunity to record the track and so it was then offered to Shontelle.
In an interview with Flavour, Magazine Shontelle commented on Leona Lewis turning down the song ” I have been hearing that rumour for a long time, but I didn’t believe it until it was actually confirmed while I was in Norway. I was like, ‘Wow! I’m glad you turned it down, because I got to sing it. ”
Music critics gave the song the thumbs up, Billboard’s Michael Menachem said ” “Shontelle shines on ‘Impossible’, giving one of the year’s standout female vocal performances and recalling the poignancy and technical precision of Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable. ”
Bill Lamb of commented about the amount of uptempo pop playing on the radio and praised Shontelle’s delivery; he wrote ” Shontelle delivers a strong, emotional R&B ballad. This smooth soul sound provides a valuable counterpart to the dominant uptempo dance music on the current pop radio. ”
The song was to be a commercial success for Shontelle, in the United States ” Impossible ” has become her most successful single to date there.
The single entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number eighty-eight, from there it climbed steadily to reach a peak of number thirteen and spent a total of twenty weeks on the chart.
” Impossible ” sold one million copies in the United States and was certified Platinum in 2010 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Outside of the US, Shontelle enjoyed more success with the song. In Europe, she took it into the Top Twenty in Norway, Belgium, Slovakia and Scotland.
In the United Kingdom, ” Impossible ” reached number nine and spent two weeks in the Top Ten, it spent a total of fourteen weeks on the UK chart. The British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ) awarded the single a Silver status with sales of 200,000 copies sold in the United Kingdom.
