The feel good song which celebrates the carefree days of 1970’s summers was written by Ray using a Fender Stratocaster that he had bought second-hand, the song took him ten minutes to write while he was taking time off from his lab job at watch manufacturer Timex.
” In the summertime ” launched the new series of Dawn Maxi-singles which played at 33 rpm and not the usual single 45 rpm, the Maxi single included another song by Ray called ” Mighty man ” on the A-side with a longer song called ” Dust Pneumonia Blues ” written by Woody Guthrie on the B-side.
” In the summertime ” features Paul King who can be seen blowing over a jug which was just an empty cider jar, Mungo Jerry made jug blowing more contemporary than the style of the jug bands from the 1920’s.

The song reached the number one slot in 26 countries, in France the single sold 400,000 copies in the first month of release and went on to sell one Million copies there.
Mungo Jerry was presented with a Gold Disc on the 23rd of November 1971 at the Olympia in Paris by Vogue International label for reaching the Million sales milestone.

” In the summertime ” has become the most played summer song in history and showing up on radio playlists every summer with commissions for films and tv shows along with commercials.
Ray commented in an interview ” The longer it goes on, the more it becomes like ‘Happy Birthday,’ because when everybody thinks of the summer, they think of ‘In The Summertime “.
With a certain amount of irony ” In the summertime ” was commissioned for a UK Government tv campaign called ” Drinking and Driving Wrecks Lives ” which warned of the dangers of drink driving.
