” It’s My Life ” is by Dr. Alban ( Alban Uzoma Nwapa ), the Nigerian-born Swedish musician and producer.
Dr. Alban was 23 when he travelled to Sweden to take up studies in dentistry. To finance his studies, he became a DJ and performed a weekend set at Alphabet Street, a club in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.
He became a favourite DJ at the venue, often rapping to the records he played. Even though he was growing in popularity, Dr. Alban still opened a dental practice after qualifying and kept his DJ work to part-time, his stage name, Dr. Alban, is a nod to his time as a dentist.
The song was written by Dr. Alban and Denniz Pop, who also produced the track. Denniz Pop ( Dag Krister “Dagge” Volle ) was a Swedish DJ, music producer and songwriter. He’d worked with Ace Of Base, The Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears.
Denniz died of stomach cancer in August 1998 at the age of 35. Along with producing some of the most significant hits of the 90s, his legacy today is remembered by The Denniz Pop Awards, created in 2013 by past members of Cheiron Studios. The award was set up to help Scandinavian songwriters, producers and artists.
” It’s My Life ” was released on the 25th of February 1992 (Europe ) and in the United States during April of the same year by record label Ariola ( Sony Music Entertainment ). It was taken as the first single from Dr. Alban’s second album, One Love.
The album, released in 1992, reached Number One on the Austrian Albums ( Ö3 Austria ) and a peak of number six on the German Albums ( Offizielle Top 100 ) charts.
The song was a commercial success for Dr. Alban. In the United States, it reached a peak of number eighty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent eleven weeks on the chart there.
Outside of the United States, the single reached Number One in Sweden, Austria, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium. In France the song reached number thirteen, it was marketed on two separate occasions, 1992 and then 1993, the second time because it was used in a Tampax TV advert.
In the United Kingdom ” It’s My Life ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 5th of September 1992 and reached a peak of number two. It spent seven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twelve weeks on the UK chart. Like France, the song was also used in a Tampax TV advert.
