They were initially known as Two Tons Of Fun in the 1970s when they became the backing singers for Sylvester, the American disco, rhythm and blues and soul singer-songwriter. He is best known for his 1978 Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart hit single ” You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) “. His backing singers, Two Tons Of Fun later changed the name to The Two Sons and finally The Weather Girls.
Using their new stage name they released three Albums, Success in 1982, Big Girls Don’t Cry in 1985 and The Weather Girls in 1988. The Weather Girls split in 1988 after their self-titled Album’s release.
” It’s Raining Men ” was written by Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer. Paul was an American actor, singer and songwriter. Paul was born in Brooklyn, New York City in 1948. He wrote many songs for other artists including ” Last Dance “, the 1978 Billboard Hot 100 Chart number three hit for Donna Summer. He also co-wrote, along with Bruce Roberts, ” The Main Event/Fight ” recorded by Barbra Streisand for the 1979 film, The Main Event. Paul died, aged 44, on the 29th of September 1992 from AIDS complications.
Paul Shaffer is a Canadian singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He is also an actor, voice actor and author. As a musical artist, he released two solo Albums, Coast to Coast, which received a nomination for a Grammy in 1989 and 1993’s The World’s Most Dangerous Party. Paul is best known for serving as David Letterman’s musical director, band leader and sidekick. He performed on the entire run of both Late Night with David Letterman from 1982 to 1993 and later on the Late Show with David Letterman which ran from 1993 to 2015.
The song was released on the 10th of September 1982 by record label Columbia Records ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken from The Weather Girls 1983 Album, Success.
The Album featured four songs written solely by Paul Jabara and two as co-writer with Paul Shaffer, which included ” Dear Santa (Bring Me A Man This Christmas) “.
” It’s Raining Men “, which has become a favourite with the gay community, was initially offered to Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Cher and Barbra Streisand, who all turned it down. Given to The Weather Girls, they weren’t keen to record it at first. They took up the song and turned it into an international hit with sales of over six million copies worldwide.
The accompanying music video was directed by Gary Keys, who was an American film director. Born on the 21st of February 1934 in Detroit, Michigan, USA, Gary is best known for his work documenting Jazz. His work includes music documentaries on Cuba and Don’t Make Me Over, about Dionne Warwick. He is best known for his three films about the jazz musician, Duke Ellington. The video for The Weather Girls was the only music video he ever directed.
” It’s Raining Men ” was a commercial success for The Weather Girls. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number forty-six on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1983, spending eleven weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 20th of August 1983 and reached a peak of number two. It spent four weeks in the top ten and a total of sixteen weeks on the UK chart.
