” January ” is by Pilot. They were a Scottish rock band who formed in Edinburgh in 1973. The group consisted of David Paton, Billy Lyall and Stuart Tosh. Later they were joined by Ian Bairnson making up the four-piece band. Pilot took their name from the initials of the first three members surnames and added some vowels to make up the group’s name.
The song was written by David Paton. David’s first band, The Beachcombers signed a recording contract with CBS Records in 1968. They later changed their name to The Boots and published their debut single, ” The Animal In Me “.
After two years the band split in 1970 due to money problems. David moved on and replaced the guitarist in another Scottish band, the Bay City Rollers, however, he never recorded with the group. In October 1970 he left to join another band, Fresh, who changed their name to Chrystian. The new group released a single in 1971 called ” Nursery Lane “.
Pilot’s first hit single was ” Magic ” which was released in 1974 and reached Number One in Canada and number eleven in the United Kingdom.
” January ” was produced by Alan Parsons, the English audio engineer, songwriter, musician and record producer. He worked on the production of several famous albums, including Abbey Road and Let It Be by the Beatles. He also was involved in Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon for which the group credited Alan as an essential contributor. His group, the Alan Parsons Project, along with his solo recordings have also been successful.
” January ” was released by record label EMI ( Universal Music Group ) in January 1975 internationally and in December for the United States, the song was taken from Pilot’s second album, Second Flight.
The song isn’t actually about January, the month, but named after a woman. In the book of 1000 UK Number One singles by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, David Paton recalled the writing process behind the song saying ” My wife was reading a book and the main character was called January. She told me this, and I wrote the chorus with that in mind. The verse is about how I felt at the time with the success of ‘ Magic ‘. ”
” January ” was a commercial success for Pilot. In the United States, the song peaked at number eighty-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent six weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, it entered the UK Singles Chart and reached Number One on the 1st of February 1975, spending three weeks at the top. The song spent six weeks in the Top Ten and a total of ten weeks on the UK chart.
