” Jingo ” is by Jellybean ( John Benitez ), the American DJ, producer, remixer and instrumentalist.
Of Puerto Rican descent, he was born on the 7th of November 1957. A successful producer and remixer, he has worked with a variety of recording artists including Madonna, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.
As Jellybean, John Benitez had two singles reach the Billboard Top Twenty in the United States: ” Sidewalk Talk ” and ” Who Found Who ” reached numbers eighteen and sixteen respectively.
To date, as a recording artist in his own right, he has released five albums and twelve singles.
” Jingo ” was released in 1987 under the record label Chrysalis, now part of the Universal Music Group.
The song is a cover version of ” Jin – go – lo – ba “, by Babatunde Olatunji, who was an award-winning Nigerian recording artist. It has also been covered by Santana, Serge Gainsbourg and James Last.
Jellybean’s version featured on his second album, Just Visiting This Planet. The album, released in 1987, had mild success in the United States. It peaked at number 101 on the 10th of October 1987 and spent eleven weeks on the Billboard 200.
In the United Kingdom, the Just Visiting This Planet album entered the UK Albums Chart on the 31st of October 1987 and reached number fifteen. It spent two weeks in the Top Twenty and twenty-eight weeks in the Top 100.
The album also charted in the Netherlands where it made number fifty.
” Jingo ” became a commercial success for Jellybean. In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 12th of December 1987 and peaked at number twelve. It spent five weeks in the Top Twenty and ten weeks in the Top 100.
The single also reached number eighteen in Switzerland, forty-four in Germany, sixteen in Belgium and sixteen in the Netherlands.
