” Judas ” is by Lady Gaga ( Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta ), the American singer, songwriter and actress. The song was written and produced by Lady Gaga and RedOne ( Nadir Khayat ).
The song was released on the 15th of April 2011 by record label Interscope and taken as the second single from her album, Born This Way.
The electro house and dance song are about betrayal, the theme being a woman who is in love with a man who betrays her. ” Judas ” is a modern take on the Biblical story of the disciple Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus.
In an interview with MSN Canada Lady Gaga explained the meaning of the song and the metaphors ” ‘Judas’ is a metaphor and an analogy about forgiveness and betrayal and things that haunt you in your life and how I believe that it’s the darkness in your life that ultimately shines and illuminates the greater light that you have upon you. Someone once said to me, ‘If you have no shadows then you’re not standing in the light.’ So the song is about washing the feet of both good and evil and understanding and forgiving the demons from your past to move into the greatness of your future. I just like really aggressive metaphors—harder, thicker, darker—and my fans do as well. So it is a very challenging and aggressive metaphor, but it is a metaphor “.
With the Biblical theme for the accompanying video and title of ” Judas ” religious groups were offended. William Anthony Donohue, the Catholic League’s president, criticised Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Mary Magdalene and the use of Catholic iconography for the video.
Lady Gaga was also attacked for the timing of the video’s release as it seemed it was intended to shock by being debuted close the Holy Week and Easter.
The video was directed by Gaga and her choreographer, Laurieann Gibson. Norman Reedus played Judas with Lady Gaga taking the role of Mary Magdalene.
It opens with a motorcycle gang heading down a freeway, dressed in leather biker gear. They represent the Twelve Apostles who followed Jesus in the Bible.
As the story plays out, she tries to warn Jesus of the betrayal by Judas but has become hypnotised by the allure of Judas.
In the last scene neither Jesus or Judas die but Mary Magdalene is put to death by stoning from the crowd that had gathered.
Although the video didn’t go down well with religious groups, generally it was well received by critics and was nominated for two awards at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2011.
The song was a commercial success for Lady Gaga. In the United States ” Judas ” entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number ten but failed to climb higher, the song spent eight weeks on the chart. It was to be her third single that debuted in the Top Ten.
In Canada, the song entered the Canadian Hot 100 Chart at number nine and peaked one place higher at number eight after one week on the chart.
” Judas ” first entered the UK Singles Chart on the 23rd of April 2011 at number fourteen, a week later it climbed to reach a peak of number eight. The song spent three weeks in the Top Ten and a total of sixteen weeks on the UK chart.
