The song was released on the 11th of April 1984 by record label Planet and taken as the third single from the group’s tenth Album ” Breakout “.
Originally ” Jump ( for my love ) ” was to be called simply ” Jump “, however this was changed and ( for my love ) added before the release because of Van Halen’s ” Jump “. because Van Halen had released their single earlier in the year it was decided to add ( for my love ) to avoid confusion.
Originally ” Jump ( for my love ) ” was to be released as the second single from the Album, it was replaced by ” Automatic ” because of the considerable radio and dance club airplay.
Although the song was pushed back, ” Jump ( for my love ) ” was to become the most successful song from the Album in the United States. There the song peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent 24 weeks on that chart. It also reached number 11 on the Adult Contemporary Chart and peaked at number 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart.
Outside of the United States, ” Jump ( for my love ) ” was a commercial success for The Pointer Sisters. The song made the top 5 in Belgium and peaked at number 3 ( Flemish chart ), in Germany the song peaked at number 20, Ireland it reached number 2, the Netherlands number 9, New Zealand number 3 and Switzerland number 13.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart on the 23rd of June 1984 and peaked at number 6, there it spent 10 weeks on the chart.
