The Album was one of Cher’s best-selling with Worldwide sales in excess of 4 million. She supported the Album with a sell out tour that shared the Album’s name in 1990. The Album topped the Album Chart in Australia and reached number 10 in the United States and 7 in the United Kingdom.
The ballad makes references to Jesse James ( Jesse Woodson James ), the American outlaw who murdered, robbed banks and trains during the 1800’s. He was the most famous of the James-Younger Gang. Jesse James was shot in the back of the head and killed on the 3rd of April 1882 by Robert Ford.
Cher has said during concerts that she never cared very much for ” Just Like Jesse James “, she said it was down to the amount of lyrics she had to sing and because the song was too close to a type of music disliked by her, Country music. Cher acknowledges that fans like the song and so continues to sing the song live.
The accompanying music video is made up of clips of Cher’s earlier videos mixed with clips from Western movies. Many fans did feel there could’ve been more of an effort to make a real video instead of the quickly put together mashup.
Despite the lack of a ” real ” video for the song, it was a commercial success for Cher. In the United States the song reached a peak of number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent 18 weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart on the 13th of January 1990 and reached a peak of number 11. It spent 4 weeks in the top 20 and a total of 11 weeks on the UK chart.
