Lyrically the song pleads with a lover to reconsider ending a romance. Bertie said of the song in the book Behind The Hits ” I lived with a girl a long time in Florida. Here name was Beverly Seaberg. We used to watch old movies on the weekends, and to us, the Bogart and Bacall romance was a phenomenal one: because of their age difference – she was 20 and he was 45 – and because the world was clamoring constantly for them to make a relationship work in Hollywood. Bev left me, and I hurt for about two years. Finally, I said, ‘Well, I’ve got to reach her somehow.’ And the only equipment I had to reach her with was a song. So I wrote the song ‘Key Largo.’ It was a plea for her return. And she did We became engaged. ”
The inspiration for the song came not from the place but from the 1948 film Key Largo, which starred Edward G. Robinson, Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart. The name Key Largo comes from the Spanish Cayo Largo, or ” long key ” and is the first island of the Florida Keys.
The accompanying music video was shot in and around Tarpon Springs, Florida. The co-star of the video was Patty Wolfe, just 17 at the time and a senior at Tarpon Springs Senior High in Tarpon Springs, Florida. She suffered from camera shyness and had to be talked into appearing in the video. The boat used was that of Bertie’s brother in law.
