Song Title: Kiss
Date of release: 5th of February 1986
Description: ” Kiss ” is by Prince ( Prince Rogers Nelson ), who was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and actor. He was a highly accomplished musician who taught himself the guitar, keyboards, drums and any other type of instrument he could. Prince could play over 27 instruments to a very high standard.
The superstar, who hated doing interviews, took the forename Prince only because he hated the last of his names. In the 90s he also used the name symbol. Prince died on the 21st of April 2016 at the age of 57 at his Paisley Park recording studio and home in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
” Kiss ” was written and produced by Prince. The single was released on the 5th of February 1986 by record label Paisley Park ( Prince’s record label ) and taken as the lead single from Prince and The Revolution’s eighth studio Album, Parade.
The Album, the last with The Revolution as his backing band, was released on the 31st of March 1986 as the follow-up to Prince’s Billboard 200 Chart number 51 Album, Around the World in a Day.
It also was the soundtrack to Under the Cherry Moon, his second film as a director and star. In the movie, Prince played Christopher Tracy, the first name which is credited as the songwriter on the Bangles Billboard Hot 100 Chart number two single ” Manic Monday “.
At the time Prince became only the fifth songwriter ( or team ) to hold the two top positions on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The others were Elvis Presley, John Lennon, The Gibb brothers and Jim Steinman. The NME ( New Musical Express ) magazine called Parade one of the best Albums of 1986 with The Village Voice naming it their Album of the year. The Album went on to sell two million copies in the United States and Worldwide.
” Kiss ” began life as a short acoustic demo. The song was given by Prince to Mazarati, the funk band. The now defunct band, formed by The Revolution bassist Brownmark ( Mark Brown ), had only one hit ” 100 MPH “. The song was written and co-produced by Prince. The band along with producer David Z reworked the track, turning it into stripped-down, minimalist sound. The track was then delivered to Prince, who was amazed at the work they had done and so decided to keep the song for himself. Prince left intact Mazarati’s backing vocals for which he gave credit. At the last minute, the song was added to the Album.
The accompanying music video was directed by Rebecca Blake, the Belgium born director and photographer. Rebecca began her career as a Still Photographer working for some of the best-known brands in the World including Estee Lauder, Revlon, Yves St. Laurent, Polaroid, Fuji, Seagrams and Rothschild Champagne.
After working with fashion and beauty photography, Rebecca moved into video directing. Along with Prince, she has collaborated with Michael Bolton, Billie Myers, Sheena Easton, Carmen Electra and Seiko Matsuda. The video features Prince in a half shirt and leather jacket and shirtless. He dances with Monique Manning who wears a veil. Wendy Melvoin, a member of Prince’s backing band Revolution, plays the guitar while sitting throughout the video.
” Kiss ” was a commercial success for Prince. In the United States, the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending two weeks at the top. In total it spent 20 weeks on the chart. The song also reached the top of the Dance/Electronic Singles Sales Charts, Dance Club Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and US Cash Box.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 8th of March 1986 and reached a peak of number six. It spent two weeks in the top ten and a total of 10 weeks on the UK chart.
