Like A Prayer Madonna
Song Title: Like A Prayer
Date of release: March the 3rd 1989
Description: ” Like A Prayer ” is by Madonna ( Madonna Louise Ciccone ) the American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress. The song was written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard.
” Like A Prayer ” was released on the 3rd of March 1989 by record label Sire and distributed by Warner Bros. The song was taken as the lead single from Madonna’s fourth Album of the same name.
The co-writer, Patrick Leonard, has worked with some of the most recognised names in music including Pink Floyd, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Leonard Cohen and Bryan Adams. He is also a long time collaborator with Madonna, working on her many different Albums.
The pop-rock track uses rock guitar which helps keep the song moody and mysterious while the addition of a gospel choir for the backing vocals gives it a spiritual nature.
During the writing process, Madonna considered instrumental tracks by producers Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard, Stephen, like Patrick Leonard, has also worked with Madonna and produced some of her biggest hits.
Both producers had a unique style and developed entirely different music to be used for the song. Madonna settled for the work of Patrick as it seemed to her to be more interesting, they worked together to write ” Like A prayer ” as the title track from the Album.
Once Madonna had conceived how her ideas would work with the music supplied by Patrick, the writing took about three hours to accomplish. They approached musician Andraé Crouch, who was part of the Los Angeles Church of God choir to supply the backing vocals. These backing vocals were recorded separately at the Jonny Yuma recording studio and added to the song during post-production.
Lyrically the song has a dual meaning; Madonna wrote the song with the intention that the song would have the typical pop lyrics about sexuality and religion with a hidden meaning that she felt would cause a reaction from listeners.
In the book by J. Randy Taraborrelli, Patrick Leonard said he wasn’t at ease with the sexual innuendos in the lyrics. In the first verse goes ” When you call my name, It’s like a little prayer, I’m down on my knees, I wanna take you there “.
He understood the reference to someone performing fellatio. Not comfortable he requested Madonna change the line, Madonna was adamant that it should stay.
The accompanying music video was directed by Mary Lambert, the American film director. Scenes were shot at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, California and at San Pedro Hills in San Pedro, California and feature actor Leon Robinson who plays the role of a saint.
The video proved to be equally controversial; it features murder, racism and sexual innuendo. So controversial in fact that after Pepsi-Cola signed a deal with Madonna for $5 Million to use the video in a television commercial campaign, they had to pull the commercial after Religious groups across the Globe protested.
Even with the Religious protests, the song was a massive commercial success for Madonna. In the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number thirty-eight and climbed to reach Number One, the song held the top slot for three weeks. The song spent sixteen weeks on the chart.
” Like A Prayer ” also reached the top slot in fourteen countries Worldwide but failed to take the top in countries like France, Germany and Austria where it reached number two.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number two and then climbed up one to take the top spot a week later where it stayed for three weeks. The song spent six weeks in the Top Ten and a total of thirteen weeks on the UK chart.
