” Livin’ la Vida Loca ” is by Ricky Martin ( Enrique “Ricky” Martín Morales ), the Puerto Rican-Spanish singer, actor and author. The song was written by Robi Rosa, Desmond Child and Luis Gómez Escolar.
Robi Rosa ( Draco Cornelius Rosa Suárez ) found fame in the early 1980s as a member of the boy band, Menudo. He owns a recording studio, a record label and Phantom Vox, a multimedia company.
Desmond Child ( John Charles Barrett ) is a producer, songwriter and musician. Desmond produced ” Bat Out of Hell III ” for Meatloaf and had worked with many artists including Kiss, Cher, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Bonnie Tyler, Selena Gomez and Kelly Clarkson.
Luis Gómez Escolar co-wrote ” María ” and ” Cup of Life “, which became the official 1998 FIFA World Cup song for the French tournament. Both songs were recorded by Ricky Martin. Production for the single was by Desmond Child and Robi Rosa.
The song was released on the 23rd of March 1999 by record label Columbia ( owned by Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken from Ricky’s multi-million selling self-titled debut English album. Before the English release, Ricky had produced four albums in Spanish.
” Livin’ la Vida Loca ” is widely accepted as being the song that started the late 90s Latin pop explosion and paving the way for other Spanish-speaking artists like Enrique Iglesias and Shakira to cross over into the English-speaking market.
The accompanying music video was directed by Wayne Isham. The American director has worked with many artists over the past thirty years including Bon Jovi, Judas Priest, Whitney Houston, Bryan Adams and Michael Jackson.
Filmed in Los Angeles, the video features Croatian model Nina Moric. The model has worked for many of the world’s top fashion designers and appeared on the front covers of many international men’s magazines.
The video received six nominations at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, which included Video of the Year, Best Male Video, Best Choreography in a Video and Viewer’s Choice. It went on to win two awards for Best Pop Video and Best Dance Video.
” Livin’ la Vida Loca ” was a commercial success for Ricky. In the United States the song became his first Number One on the Billboard Hot 100, it spent five consecutive weeks at the top and a total of twenty weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the single first entered the UK Singles Chart on the 17th of July 1999 at Number One and spent three weeks at the top. It remained in the Top Ten for eight weeks and a total of nineteen weeks on the UK chart.
The song is Ricky’s biggest hit and his signature song, even today ” Livin’ la Vida Loca ” still has a cult following.
