The members of the band went through several name changes before turning professional in 1968, including The Sphynx, Essence and The Elizabethans. Once professional, they changed their name to Kindness and performed at holiday camps and other venues around the country. Without a recording contract, the name was changed again to Smokey and later to Smokie.
Smokie found success when they joined Rak Records and were introduced to songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. They have released twenty-one studio Albums and many singles ( including five that charted in the Top Five in the UK ) between 1975 and 2010. Today, they still tour the UK and Europe.
The song was written and produced by English songwriters and record producers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Nicky was born on the 16th of May 1945 in London, England. As a young man his writing talent became apparent, within a couple of months, he’d co-written, along with Mike d’Abo, the two original songs for There’s a Girl in My Soup, a 1970 film starring Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn. Nicky Chinn joined Mike Chapman to form one of the most successful writing partnerships of the 70s and 80s. In 1978, they scored their first Billboard Hot 100 Chart Number One with ” Kiss You All Over ” by Exile, which founded as an American rock band by guitarist J.P. Pennington, changing later to country music.
Mike Chapman is an Australian record producer and songwriter. Born on the 13th of April 1947 in Queensland, Australia, he became a successful songwriter during the 70s and 80s with his partner Nicky Chinn. Along with Nicky Chinn, they wrote the 1982 US Number One single ” Mickey ” for Toni Basil, giving the duo their second American chart-topper. Later Mike went on to produce breakthrough Albums for Blondie and The Knack, which was American rock band that rose to fame worldwide with ” My Sharona “, their debut single.
” Living Next Door to Alice ” was released on the on the 12th of August 1976 by Rak Records ( Blue Raincoat Music ) in the United Kingdom and RSO Records ( Universal Music Group ) in the United States and Canada.
The song appears on their remastered third Album, Midnight Café. The original Album, which didn’t feature the song, was released in April 1976. Midnight Café peaked at number 173 on the Billboard 200 Chart in the United States, it fared better elsewhere, reaching number six in Germany and twelve in Norway. The song appears on the 2007 remastered version of the original Album as a bonus track.
Lyrically, the song is about a young man who had unrequited love for a girl called Alice, who lived next door for twenty-four years. He’d seen a limousine parked outside her home and learning through a mutual friend called Sally that she is moving away, he reflects on childhood memories and his friendship with her.
It was originally recorded by New World, which was an Australian pop group that had success during the mid-60s to late 1970s. They are best known for their version of the glam rock band the Sweet’s ” Tom-Tom Turnaround ” and ” Sister Jane “, which reached number nine on the UK Singles Chart in 1972.
” Living Next Door to Alice ” was a commercial success for Smokie. In the United States, the song reached number twenty-five on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending twenty weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 4th of December 1976 and reached a peak of number five. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and a total of eleven weeks on the UK chart.
The song also charted in Australia, Austria, Canada, Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
