Her debut Album, released in 2006, just titled Taylor Swift, reached number five on the Billboard 200 Chart, it went on to spend the most weeks on the chart in the 2000s. The third single from the Album, ” Our Song “, made Taylor the youngest person to single-handedly write and perform a Hot Country Songs Chart Number One.
As of July 2015, her debut Album has sales of 5.52 Million in the United States. During her career to date, Taylor has won 10 Grammy Awards, five Guinness World Records, one Emmy Award, 21 Billboard Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, eight Academy of Country Music Awards, and one Brit Award. She has also won awards from the Nashville Songwriters Association and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
In 2015 Rolling Stone included her in the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time list. Taylor is one of all time best-selling music artists, with sales exceeding 40 Million Albums, which includes 27.8 Million in the United States alone. Her singles have been downloaded 130 Million times.
The song was written by Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff, Fred Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass, Christopher Fairbrass and Rob Manzoli.
Production for the single was by Jack Antonoff. Jack is an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He is more widely known as the lead singer and songwriter of Bleachers; the New York City based American indie pop act. The most successful Bleachers single to date, ” I Wanna Get Better “, reached the top of the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles Chart and topped the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart in 2014. He is also the lead guitarist of fun, the indie rock band. He has been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and has won three Grammy Awards. He is also the founder of the annual Shadow of The City music festival in New Jersey.
” Look What You Made Me Do ” was released on the 24th of August 2017 by record label Big Machine Records ( independent American record label for country and pop artists ) and is taken from her upcoming sixth Album, Reputation.
The Album, scheduled for release on the 10th of November 2017, will be standard edition, no deluxe edition is expected for release. To accompany the release there will be two editions of a magazine, also called Reputation. The magazines will be available exclusively at Target, America’s second-largest discount store retailer with 1,806 outlets.
The song features ” I’m Too Sexy ” by British group Right Said Fred within the composition. Right Said Fred took their single to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1991 but only made number two on the UK Singles Chart. Bryan Adams stopped them from reaching Number One with ” (Everything I Do) I Do It for You “. Because Taylor used elements of the song in her composition, Fred Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass, Christopher Fairbrass and Rob Manzoli are credited as writers.
” Look What You Made Me Do “, Taylor’s first solo release in two years, has been described by music critics as a fusion of electroclash, pop, dance-pop and electropop. Praised by some and not by others it has divided opinion amongst the music critics and public alike. Some people think the song is about Taylor’s public spats with Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris, and Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. Others say it’s Taylor burying the old persona and rebirthing a new one.
The accompanying music video was directed by Joseph Kahn ( Ahn Jun-hee ). Joseph, an American film and music video director, won his first Grammy in 2002 for Eminem’s ” Without Me ” video, which also won Best Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards ( MTV VMA ). He has worked with the likes of Eminem, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga and George Michael.
Taylor features at the beginning of the video as a zombie crawling out from a grave. The headstone reads ” Here Lies Taylor Swift’s reputation “. She then begins digging another grave for herself. Scenes have hidden meanings and references.
For example in the opening scene, there is a tombstone with the subtle inscription ” Nils Sjöberg “, which is a reference to the pseudonym Taylor used for a songwriting credit on ” This Is What You Came For “, the 2016 Calvin Harris number three Billboard Hot 100 Chart hit single.
In another scene, there is a reference to the one dollar award Taylor received after the sexual assault court case she brought against ex-radio DJ David Mueller. However, others speculate it is, in fact, a reference to Kim Kardashian’s 2016 gunpoint robbery.
” Look What You Made Me Do ” is a commercial success for Taylor. In the United States, the song debuted at number seventy-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart due to the first three days of airplay. It also sold just shy of 200,000 digital copies within the first day of sales in the country. The song has become the fastest selling download since ” Shape of You ” by Ed Sheeran, a Billboard Hot 100 Chart Number One.
In the United Kingdom, ” Look What You Made Me Do ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 1st of September 2017 at Number One. The single sold 20,000 copies and was streamed 2.4 million times in under a week of release. The song is Taylor’s first chart topping single in the United Kingdom.
