Kylie became better known to the public when playing tomboy mechanic Charlene Robinson in Neighbours, the Australian soap opera.
After gaining one of the biggest television audiences ever in the United Kingdom ( 20 Million ) when she married Scot ( played by Jason Donovan ), Kylie has since gone on to become an award-winning recording artist. In 2008 she was presented with an OBE ( Order of the British Empire ) by Charles, the Prince of Wales. As of 2015, her record sales have exceeded 80 million.
” Love at First Sight ” was written by Kylie Minogue, Richard Stannard, Julian Gallagher, Ash Howes and Martin Harrington. Richard Stannard, Julian Gallagher and Ash Howes are a music production and songwriting team from Brighton, England known as Biffco. The team have worked with many top artists, including Kylie Minogue, One Direction, Ellie Goulding, Leona Lewis and Little Mix. They also played a significant role in the rise of English groups the Spice Girls, Five and East 17. Richard Stannard and Julian Gallagher worked as producers for this track.
The song was released on the 10th of June 2002 by record labels Capitol ( Universal Music Group ), Parlophone and Mushroom (Latter two Warner Music Group ). It was taken as the second song from Kylie’s eighth studio Album, Fever.
The Album, released on the 1st of October 2001, is influenced by disco, Europop, dance-pop, synthpop and club music. There were four singles were released, with the lead single, ” Can’t Get You Out of My Head “, released on the 8th of September 2001, being the most commercially successful. The song topped the charts in 40 countries and sold over five million copies worldwide and is one of the best-selling singles of all time. Worldwide sales of Fever are over six million copies.
The song is dance-oriented in composition; the Lyrics describe Kylie believing in love at first sight. Critics gave the song positive reviews commenting on the commercial appeal and structure of the single. However, there was some criticism directed towards the production similarities of Kylie’s previous singles from the Album.
The accompanying music video was directed by Johan Renck, the Swedish director of music videos, TV and film. Johan directed the ten-minute video for ” Blackstar “, David Bowie’s lead single from his twenty-fifth and Last studio album of the same name. He has worked with a variety of artists including All Saints, New Order, Robyn, Robbie Williams, Beyonce, The Cardigans and Lana Del Rey.
” Love at First Sight ” was a commercial success for Kylie. In the United States, the song reached number twenty-three on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending sixteen weeks on the chart there. It also topped the Hot Dance Club Songs chart and reached number ten on the Mainstream Top 40 Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 22nd of June 2002 and peaked at number two. It spent two weeks in the top ten and a total of twelve weeks on the UK chart.
