Description: ” Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) ” is by Edison Lighthouse, the English pop band. The band was formed in London in 1970 with the original lineup of lead vocalist Tony Burrows, Stuart Edwards on lead guitar, David Taylor on bass guitar, Ray Dorey on guitar and George Weyman playing drums.
They took their name from Eddystone Lighthouse which is situated on the dangerous Eddystone Rocks in Devon, England. There has been a lighthouse on the site since 1699, the lighthouse was then the first open ocean lighthouse in the World.
The song was written by Tony Macaulay ( also produced ), Barry Mason and Sylvan Whittingham. Tony Macaulay is a nine time Ivor Novello Awards winning songwriter. He co-wrote ” Sorry Suzanne ” for the Hollies along with Geoff Stephens and has written for David Soul, Donna Summer and many more artists.
Barry Mason is a five times Ivor Novello Awards winner, most recently in 1998. He has written such hits as ” There Goes My First Love ” and ” Delilah ” and many more. His songs have been recorded by artists including Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, P. J. Proby, David Essex, The Drifters, Rod Stewart and Petula Clark.
Sylvan Whittingham was married to Barry Mason and co-wrote ” Delilah ” which Tom Jones turned into a hit in 1968.
” Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) ” was recorded in November 1969 and released by record label Bell Records in January 1970 in the UK and the 21st of February 1970 in the US.
Originally Tony Macaulay and Barry Mason worked with session musicians and in demand session singer Tony Burrows on vocals. Edison Lighthouse didn’t actually exist as a real group, but were hastily put together for an appearance on the British TV music show Top of the Pops. As the song was rising quickly up the UK charts they needed a band to front the song. A group called Greenfield Hammer was used for the appearance and mimed the song with Tony Burrows on lead vocals.
Tony Burrows also sang lead on other songs and found himself banned by the BBC for appearing too many times on Top of the Pops. His other lead vocals were The Pipkins ” Gimme Dat Ding “, White Plains ” My Baby Loves Lovin’ ” and Brotherhood of Man’s ” United We Stand “. Tony also was the lead vocalist on the 1974 hit single ” Beach Baby ” by The First Class.
Edison Lighthouse had huge success with ” Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) “, at the time the song was the fastest climb to the UK Number One in its chart history after only its second week.
In the UK the song entered the chart on the 24th of January 1970 and climbed to reach Number One, it stayed at the top for 5 weeks. It spent 7 weeks in the top ten and a total of 12 weeks on the UK chart.
In the United States the song reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent 13 weeks on the chart there. The song sold a Million copies in the US and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
