” Love In The First Degree ” is by Bananarama, the British female 80s pop music vocal group from London. Original members include Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward.
The song was written by Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward along with Matt Aitken, Mike Stock and Pete Waterman.
Production was by Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. Stock Aitken Waterman, also known as SAW, is a British songwriting and record producing trio who during the mid-80s and early 1990s had a string of hit records with artists including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Donna Summer and Rick Astley.
They are considered to be one of the most successful songwriting and producing teams ever, they racked up one hundred UK Top Forty hit singles, selling more than forty million records and earning in the region of $100 Million during that time.
” Love In The First Degree ” was released on the 28th of September 1987 by record label London Records and taken as the group’s second single from their fourth Album, Wow!. In the United States, the song was released in 1988 as their third single after ” I Can’t Help It “.
The uptempo pop song was first composed by Siobhan Fahey and musically based on the German composer Johann Pachelbel’s Canon. The rest of the group’s members Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward along with producers SAW built upon the original idea.
Lyrically the song describes a dream in which the girls find themselves on trial for their love of a particular person. The song is a play on murder in the first degree, the most serious of crimes.
The accompanying music video was directed by Andy Morahan, the English commercial, film and music video director. He has worked on music videos for artists including Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Pet Shop Boys, Wham!, Ozzy Osbourne, Tina Turner, A-HA and Van Halen. He also directed the 1994 film Highlander III – The Sorcerer.
In the video, the girls perform ” Love In The First Degree ” in a prison cell dressed in striped prison uniforms. Male dancers perform dance routines around them. The theme of the video resembles the 1957 movie Jailhouse Rock featuring Elvis Presley.
Commercially the song was a success for Bananarama. In the United States the song peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number forty-eight, it spent ten weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 10th of October 1987 and reached number three. It spent four weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twelve weeks on the UK chart.
