Description: ” Love to Hate You ” is by Erasure, the English synthpop duo, made up of Andy Bell and Vince Clarke. Erasure was formed in London in 1985, the duo released their first single ” Who Needs Love Like That ” on the 2nd of September 1985.
But it gained only moderate success with it reaching number 55 on the UK chart and number 8 on the U.S. Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs Chart.
Andy Bell ( Andrew Ivan “Andy” Bell ) grew up in Dogsthorpe, which is a residential area in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire in the United Kingdom. It was in 1985 when Andy was selling women’s shoes and performing as a member of Void ( not the American hardcore punk band ), Baume and Dinger that he saw a newspaper advertisement advertising for a singer. He auditioned and was successful.
Vince Clarke ( Vincent John Martin ) was born in South Woodford, London, United Kingdom before moving to Basildon, the largest town in the borough of Basildon in the county of Essex, England.
He began his musical journey by studying the violin and then later the piano. After hearing the synth band OMD ( Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ) he decided to try his hand at electronic music. Vince went on to become one of the main songwriters for Depeche Mode, Yazoo and The Assembly before forming Erasure.
” Love to Hate You ” was written by Andy and Vince with production for the single by Martyn Phillips. Martyn has worked with many artists including The Christians, Simon Climie, Amy Grant and The Beloved.
The single was released on the 9th of September 1991 by Mute Records ( EMI Group ) in the United Kingdom and Sire Records ( Warner Music Group ) in the United States.
Andy and Vince got the inspiration for the electronic dance track from the disco music era of the late 70s early 80s. It has been suggested that the song uses string break from ” I Will Survive “, the disco classic by Gloria Gaynor released in October 1978 as the melody in the chorus. The original recording of the song was deemed by the Library of Congress to be ” culturally, historically, or artistically significant “, so much so that in 2016 it was selected for the National Recording Registry.
The accompanying music video was directed by David Mallet, the British director made his name in the latter part of the 70s and became one of the most sought after music video directors during the following decade.
He has worked with many artists from all types of music. He directed Queen’s ” Radio Ga Ga “, David Bowie’s ” Ashes to Ashes ” and Billy Idol’s ” Eyes Without a Face ” to name just a few of the 50+ videos he worked on.
” Love to Hate You ” was a commercial success for Erasure. The song entered the UK chart on the 21st of September 1991 and reached a peak of number 4. It spent 5 weeks in the top ten and a total of 9 weeks on the UK chart.
The song reached the top ten in Ireland, Finland and Austria. In the United States it reached number 17 on the Billboard US Dance/Club Play Singles Chart and number 10 on the US Hot Dance Music Sales Chart.
