It was released in June 1975 in the Netherlands under the title of ” Love to Love You ” and Worldwide on the 26th of November 1975 with the addition of Baby added to the title. The song was taken from Donna’s second Album of the same name.
The Album was her first released in the United States and the rest of the World, her first Album, Lady of the Night, was released only in the Netherlands. Lady of the Night reached a peak of number 11 on the Billboard 200 Chart and number 16 on the UK Albums Chart, going Gold in both countries.
Donna was unknown in the US when she came up with the lyric ” Love to Love You Baby “, which she suggested to Giorgio Moroder. He took her suggestion and turned it into a disco song, he then asked her to record the song.
Lyrically the song was explicit and Donna said she’d only record the song as a demo, to be offered to another artist to record. The song featured Donna’s moans and groans, which impressed Giorgio, he managed to persuade her to record the song as her own, she did and it became a small hit in the Netherlands.
A tape was sent to Neil Bogart, president of Casablanca Records, who suggested the track should be longer, possibly 20 minutes. Even though Donna had reservations, she recorded a longer version while laying on the studio floor in near darkness, she imagined herself as an actress ( Marilyn Monroe ) playing the part of someone in sexual ecstasy. The recording lasted over 16 minutes and according to the BBC, the track contained over 20 orgasms.
” Love to Love You Baby ” was a commercial success for Donna. In the United States the song reached a peak of number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent 18 weeks on the chart there. It reached number 3 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart and Number One on the Dance Club Songs Chart.
