Description: “Macarena” by Los del Río is actually song about a woman called surprisingly “Macarena”. This song was first released in 1995 and went on to be a monster hit in the clubs Worldwide. Along with the hit year of 1995 it also enjoyed success in 1996, and 1997 with continuing success as a floorfiller even today.
“Macarena” was certainly one of the most iconic 90’s dance tracks and in 2002 was ranked number one of the ” Greatest One-Hit Wonder of all Time ” by VH1. The song is built around a type of clave rhythm which is a rhythmic pattern used in many Afro-Cuban music including rumba, conga, son, mambo, salsa and songo.
“Macarena” is ranked by Billboard at number 7 on the All Time Top 100 along with a rank of number 1 on the Billboard All Time Latin Songs. Along with these two achievements, this song has been Billboard’s Number 1 dance song and one of six foreign language songs to reach the number one slot since 1955.
1992 was the year the song was originally recorded and 1993 the song was released as a sort of Rumba, this version is just one of six that can be associated with Los del Río. A flamenco rumba version fused with pop and Spanish only lyrics gained success in countries like Spain, Colombia and Mexico.
The song became a huge Worldwide hit when in mid 1996 a trio of producers called The Bayside Boys consisting of Mike Triay, Carlos de Yarza, and Jammin Johnny Caride remixed it adding English lyrics written by Yarza and Triay. A new dance beat was added and targeted to American and British audiences with the English lyrics sung by Carla Vanessa. The final version was named “Macarena (Bayside Boys Remix).” This reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August of 1996 and was so popular it stayed at the top for 14 weeks which is the longest stays at the top in Billboard Chart history.
Although “Macarena” enjoyed huge success Worldwide and enjoyed the longest number one stay in Billboard history the song just failed to reach the top slot in the UK reaching number two, denied the top rank by the Spice Girls song “Wannabe”.
