The mid-tempo R&B ballad, described as a ” slinky “, is about demanding sexual satisfaction. The song was originally titled ” Make Me (Oooh) “, and due for release in May 2016, the release was delayed because of problems with production. It was then reported that a release would be in the summer, but no actual date was given.
Later in May reports surfaced that the main reason for the delayed release was because rapper G-Eazy was to feature on the song.
The single’s cover art was released on the 14th of July 2016 which showed Britney walking through the desert wearing white thigh length boots and draped in a white trailing piece of fabric.
The next day ” Make Me… ” was released as a digital download on the iTunes store, it was also released to a limited number of radio stations. The following day the song was made available on music streaming platforms.
Music critics liked the song. Entertainment Weekly’s Kevin O’Donnell wrote that the song was a ” woozy, future-funk burner…packed with whooshing synths and a seductive, dubstep-esque boom-bap “.
Michael Cragg reviewing the song for British newspaper The Guardian wrote that the track ” aims a current pop zeitgeist – that of the mood-drenched slowed down sex jam – but this time walks away from a clear victor “.
The accompanying music video was directed by Randee St. Nicholas. She has worked on videos for artists including Carrie Underwood, Sixpence None The Richer, Rod Stewart and Celine Dion. It was reported initially that director David LaChapelle would be the director with Britney releasing scenes online as a teaser. However, the record label, RCA, decided the tamer version was to be used instead.
