The song was written by Oren Yoel ( who produced this track ) and Miley Cyrus. Oren is an American record producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He has worked with many artists including Macy Gray, Eliza Doolittle and the American pop rock band, Parachute. He also co-wrote with Miley Cyrus ” Adore You “, which reached number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 2014.
” Malibu ” was released on the 11th of May 2017 by record label RCA ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and is taken as the lead single from Miley’s upcoming sixth studio Album, which is due to be for release in October 2017.
Miley wrote ” Malibu ” while on her way to her first day on The Voice, where she was a judge during the show’s 11th season. She was taking a ride in an Uber cab, operated by the controversial transportation and food delivery mobile apps company. Lyrically the song focuses on her relationship with current fiance and fellow The Last Song co-star, Liam Hemsworth.
The song has had a mixed reaction from critics. Writing for The New York Times, Jon Pareles, said the song was as ” nice as can be “, adding ” The only shock is that there’s no shock.”
Entertainment Weekly’s Joey Nolfi was positive for the song in his review saying it was ” minimal, refreshing, and simple in tone “, calling it ” radio-friendly. ”
However, not everyone shared the enthusiasm for the song. Writing for Pitchfork, the American online magazine, Jillian Mapes was critical of the track. He called it ” sedated “, ” wholly inoffensive “, and ” a shrug of a song “, also adding that ” [Malibu is] so breezy, it makes Sheryl Crow seem edgy, or Lady Gaga’s Joanne resemble a legit rock’n’roll reinvention. “.
The accompanying music video was directed by Miley and Diane Martel, the American music video director and choreographer. Diane has worked with many artists like Gang Starr, Method Man, Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey, who Diane directed the video for the Christmas hit ” All I Want for Christmas Is You “.
The video, released on the 11th of May 2017, was filmed the central California coast and features Miley several shots on a beach holding balloons, sitting in front of a waterfall, in wildflower fields and running with a dog. Throughout she is dressed in various white outfits.
” Malibu ” has been a commercial success for Miley. In the United States the song reached a peak of number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and to date has spent four weeks on the chart there. It also peaked at number twenty-one on the Billboard Adult ( Top 40 ) and eighteen on the Mainstream Top 40.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 25th of May 2017 and reached a peak of number eleven. It has spent three weeks in the top twenty and to date three weeks on the UK chart.
